Lots of museums in NZ have concentrated on the Maori history, but this museum has a fascinating collection of whaling and Antarctic exploration memorabilia. There was a particularly interesting account of some of the awful ship wrecks on the islands south of New Zealand, such as Auckland Island. Well worth a visit.

A very good museum with a lot of sound information about Southland and its history, geology and wild life. Not so hot as an art gallery with only a limited display of paintings featuring a narrow subject range. What is there is good but is limited.

We had a great time exploring the giant pyramid! The Tuataras were out & the amount of variety in the museum displays was fantastic! My daughter's favourite area was the fossils & rocks area - I liked the birds & bugs - very cool as we have seen some of them in real life but neat to see some of... More

A real surprise. We weren't expecting much, a quick run around and we should be out in about 15 minutes....75 minutes later we walked out talking about the broad array of exhibitions that were on display. Museums that we visited all surprised us, with their scope and detail...this one especially

This is an excellent Museum with constantly changing events and historic displays and works of local artists and schools. The Pyramid Cafe is first rate and the Museum Shop and regional i-Site Information Centre make it a great place to visit any time of the year.

The Southland Museum and Art Gallery (SMAG, really!) had me right from the word 'go'. They happened to have a WOW (World of Wearable Arts) exhibition on when I chanced upon it as a day visitor to Invercargill. Irresistable, with trinkets in the shop to make me remember the visit. Now that I am living in Invercargill I love that... More

I found the exhibits related to New Zealand's subantactic very interesting. I also enjoyed seeing the tuatara that the Museum have been breeding over a number of years. These were both a pleasant surprise for me. Before or after visiting the Museum, it is really worthwhile to make some time to walk around the wonderful Queens Park.

One a wet Invercargill day we decided to pop down to the museum as we were visiting Invercargill and hasn't been there before. Even though it's a little museum to what we are used to it did have more then a few very interesting exhibits eg the wedding room, tuatara breeding enclosure, art gallery area and the Victorian wing. Dosent... More
