If you have run out of things to do and you have time then I'd recommend going, however there isn't too much here. Would be good for little kids, however I wouldn't go out of my way to go if there were other things to do instead.

Probably one of the few places where you can see tuatara thanks to the successful breeding program. Quite apart from this there are some wonderful exhibits, some historical, some contemporary artworks as well as a huge number of natural history exhibits including kakapo, albatross, penguin and mollymauk. This is a great place to spend an hour or more on a... More

Roaring 40's exhibition probably the best of all exhibits. Great local museum. Tricky with layout to move seamlessly around. Good to see some changing exhibitions on show.

Displays from my childhood 60 years ago still in place. Some interesting newer areas fitting with the modern museum too. Two suggestions....The Gallipoli Display advertised on your Web has closed...one reason why I wanted to visit again...please remove from the www. The hand wind telephones have been vandalised..easy fix and therefore would be great to use again.

The Southland Museum and Art Gallery was a very enjoyable place to visit after our walk in Queens Park. It had been raining so we called in to get out of the rain and were surprised at what the Museum had to offer especially the Tuatara enclosure. I could have spent hours there just wandering around seeing all the items... More

I'll admit the tuatara were the main attraction for us visiting the museum -- and when we went into the viewing area, I spent a good bit of time scanning all the hard-to-see places before realising one was *right in front* of us. And several more were front-and-centre in the other enclosures! Amazing. The remainder of the museum was a... More
