- Aussie_2012Melbourne, Australia827 contributionsGet your walking shoes onYou see Baldwin Street from the bottom and think ... why??!!! But it's fun and I'm sure the locals get a kick out of being in such a unique location. There's enough parking on the streets below and a few local traders trying to make a quick buck. We were fortunate that it was relatively quiet but as we were departing there were a couple tour buses arriving so the crowds tripled in size rather quickly. The walk up can be done either via the road itself but watch out for local traffic as this is a normal street. A less taxing and easier climb is via the right hand side pedestrian pathway of the street via steps. Incredibly we watched a cyclist ride up the street. No doubt his ride down was a lot easier and faster. Note: It is steep in parts particularly near the top so watch your balance as it is a long way down on hard concrete should you tumble. We did see some people almost lose their balance trying to take selfies.Visited December 2022Written 7 January 2023

Walked up and back down, rain didn't stop, Pictures do not do justice to just how steep this street is, Well worth the walk, definitely gets the heart pumping hardVisited January 2023Written 14 January 2023
- dom cSan Francisco, California25 contributionsGood Fresh Fun on a hill.Coming from the past its a good place to visit when in the area of Dunedin. If you have your own transport drive along the way to Baldwin Street. Pay attention to the street signs and there is some historical information at the foot of the street. There is also a cafe a street along if you wish, otherwise there are t/a and other cafes near by to try out in the morning. Lots of people around including tours, and the street is actually steeper than it looks getting further in degree as you walk your way up across/on/along the street! Good view point and generally good fun challenge walking up to get your photo. Certainly rivals those of SF USA and Hba TAS and parts of Europe in terms of steepness. Worth a look if you have transport.Visited December 2022Written 15 January 2023
- TommoMelbourne, Australia49,674 contributionsWorlds steepest streetWe had heard about the Worlds Steepest Street and decided to visit. Its quite popular as people were coming and going during our visit. We parked at the bottom of the street and even manged to walk to the top. Part way up there is a seating area for those who want to rest part way up. We met other travellers who enjoyed chatting to. We did see a few vehicles struggling and spinning as they reached the top. The views here are fantastic.Visited December 2022Written 26 January 2023
- Laurel MCalgary, Canada833 contributionsNot as bad as I thought it’d be and worth the views from the top!Drove to Baldwin Street and parked along the road adjacent. It’s also possible to take local city transit here. The street is deceiving as views from the bottom don’t look that impressive. Very gentle slope for the first bit then becomes very steep, very fast. There’s no traffic on Baldwin Street so you can walk up the middle or the sidewalk on both sides. The right side going up has steps for much of the climb which makes it easier on the knees. It’s like a party atmosphere here! I think most people made it to the top and it was nowhere near as difficult as I thought it would be. Beautiful views from the top and nice to chat with the other walkers. Fun activity!Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 February 2023
- OldjackGreater Melbourne, Australia27,764 contributionsWalk , Don't DriveI had an odd feeling I had ben on steeper streets but I drove up it, had dicciulty turning around and down it. It was steep witha 35% gradient in places but down the bottom it looked like any other small hill side street. But Dunedin needs some claim to fame and this is it. Worth a visit.Visited March 2023Written 1 April 2023

Baldwin Street is definitely worth a visit if you’re in Dunedin. It doesn’t take long (and costs nothing) but it’s great for photo opportunities and, after all, it holds a Guinness World Record!

Can now tick this off bucket list. Did as a group of medics covering FIFA WWC and we all made it. Great thing to say you've done it but certainly not easy. Was inspired by group of 70+'s coming down when we arrived at bottom.

Yeah so at the end of the day it's just a steep street you take a picture of and move on from, but these are the sorts of places you want to go to on holiday surely? You don't go all the way to Dunedin then say you couldn't be bothered to check out it's main claim to fame?
Be careful though as it is quite a bit out of town and not walkable, in my opinion, from downtown area. So you need to get a bus out here or be on a tour.
Good stop for photographers to take the 'leaning house' shot against a straight road view and a nice touch to see Hooper's Step at the top.
There are flat, shallow stairs which are much easier on the knees for going back down. For going up it has to be the head down, bum out and tiptoe steps approach to be traditional. :-)
My only gripe, and why I took a star off, is that the tourist centre beside it has now closed down so you can't get the I Climbed the Steepest Street certificates anymore. Pity as I like to have a little souvenir rather than just take a photo.

Hubby and myself walked up and down Baldwin Street, along with a bus load of tourists - he was huffing and puffing on the way up so we got a bit of a cardio workout - wouldn't want to live at the top of this street and I'd want good brakes on my car :)
We parked the RV in a street around the corner - there's no way you'd take it up there !

To be honest there's little to see. It's a residential street. It is, as billed, very steep indeed. Er...that's it. It's one photo, and you're done. Not worth going off your itinerary imho.

Full-on touristy but fun.
Walking up the steepest street in the world…maybe, maybe not.
Nonetheless, it’s a good lung and leg burner.
Curious it’s not used by locals for workouts

Definitely worth making it to the top for the view back down. I chose to take the steps to come down which was a little less risky I think.

You have to see it to believe it, what a fantastic sight, wouldn't live there even if it was free. Imagine this street on a freezing Dunedin winters morning trying to get either up or down it.

The worlds steepest street…
I joined 2 bus loads of tourists walking the street… yes, the top
portion was the steepest.. it was ok, was. a Little tired afterwards,
but that wore off after a few mins!
The actual road walk was hard on my “ dress shoes”.. this was not planned…, so walked on the flatter stepped sidewalk footpath!
What can I say.. I WALKED UP THE WORLDS STEEPEST STREET!!
