Visit Christchurch on the 5th year anniversary of the earthquake and it was lovely to see the chairs repainted and with flowers on each chair. Even though it is sad I think "185 Empty Chairs", Earthquake Remembrance Installation, is a must see for those visiting...More

I don't mean to sound insensitive here, but as memorials go, I find this one neither original, nor appropriate, some 5 years on from the most devastating natural disaster in New Zealand in living memory. I say this as a frontline emergency services professional who...More

This place is self speaking. It is very sad to think about the 185 people who lost their live during the earthquake and this piece of art represents very well the emptiness left in their families. Beautiful and emotional.

This simple memorial summed up the sadness of the deaths caused by the earthquake. A small book of memories or guest book is in a little shelter next to it, and the memorial is next to the cardboard Cathdral, making the whole area a good...More

These chairs represent the people who died in the television station building during the earthquake. Each chair is different and represents the personality of the person who passed. It’s a sad memorial.

Nice to see the town recognize the sadness of the lives lost on the earthquake in tasteful way. Chairs have been donated by families of those lost and some by recycle/second hand stores.

Ok, a place to reflect on the feb earthquake and those that unfortunately lost there lives. not much to see but a group of white chairs. I could think a far better memorials for the souls of christchurch that were taken suddenly

Very sobering to reflect on the tragic earthquake at this memorial, all unique just like each person. a great memorial that is so thought provoking and real.

Our experience was to find the place looking a bit neglected, chairs on sides, cramped area. It is not a site that is a must visit. RIP

What a simple memorial to the 185 people who died in the 2011 earthquake. It is a very simple yet very effective way of rememberance.

Really makes you think about the lives lost in this devastating earthquake. The sheer everyday-ness of the chairs is specially haunting.

This is a humble spot by any means. The chairs represent the people who died in the Christchurch Earthquake of 2011. What impressed us is that there were baby chairs representing the youngsters who had died. It is a sad but good feeling that they...More
