The pedestrian Bridge of Remembrance was dedicated to those who were in World War I and II and is centrally located upon the Avon River at Cashel Street – which is basically the entrance to Christchurch’s CBD. A beautiful memorial. There are steps at one entrance but not the other so those with mobility issues can still visit the bridge.

Christchurch’s Bridge of Remembrance is a memorial to those who fought in the “Great War”. The bridge was officially opened on November 11, 1924. Today the bridge and archway are dedicated to those who served during the world wars as well Vietnam and other conflicts. It is a pedestrian-only bridge. The arches have floral medallions and names of those who gave their lives. Two lion sculptures are on the two small arches. The lion was a symbol of the British Empire. Spanning the Avon River, both the bridge and arch suffered damage during the 2011 earthquake. It was restored and reopened on the 2016 Anzac Day.

Walking along the little river we saw this structure from a distance and wondered what it was. It is a lovely memorial really well done. It is like a victory arch in the form of a bridge over the river. It must have a very special meaning for a lot of people. Take the time to have a good look and read all the information there

Just to walk by and feel the force of those that are being remembered was nice. So many people stop to take photos as a nice keepsake.

Nice area by the river. We sat and watch street performers in the brilliant sun. Nice green space next to bridge where families sat and enjoyed the show.

The memorial is very conveniently located right on the edge of the city centre (no walking required). It is dignified and stately in its design. It's not hard to find an well worth a look.

Impressive memorial to war soliders close to the river. Right in the heart of the city by the Riverside Market. Close to the river so can feed the eels. Very majestic and moving

A large structure in the centre of Christchurch. Hard to kiss and worth a look. The Bridge of Remembrance, war memorials in it is dedicated to those who died in World War I and serves as a memorial for those who participated in two World Wars as well as subsequent conflicts in Borneo, Korea, Malaya, and Vietnam. The Bridge of Remembrance was repaired and strengthened following the 2011 Christchurch earthquake and reopened on Anzac Day in 2016.
