Great place if you enjoy museums. Such a great selection. Could spend hours there topped off by the cafe for lunch

The Canterbury Museum is a great place to spend a chilly winters afternoon. Each time I visit there is a new display and the museum has a significant collection that can be rotated through the display and storage cycle. The archives and reading rooms have...More

We love the museum as this winter is a bit cold in Christchurch. We ended up spending a bit of time in this museum. Once the weather clear up, so explore the garden next door. Only next to the beautiful Botanical Garden.

Entry is free, but worth a donation. Really great displays and there are even rotating exhibitions, normally worth the extra visit. Good educational experience for all ages. Bring a camera.

This museum is a local landmark, dating from early Christchurch and surviving the earthquakes. Good displays of Maori history and artefacts, birds, Antarctica, and strangely Asian arts.

We were amazed that there was no entry fee. The exhibits were beautifully displayed & gave us an insight into the early settlement of Christchurch. We had a delicious lunch in the onsite coffee shop.

It has costumes, fossils, reproduction of old streets, home accessories... and even a space for temporary exhibition. Best just to focus on one or two sections at a time, as it simply has too wide a variety!

We enjoyed the Museum. The displays are excellent and the Paua Shell house is a highlight. Make sure you view the movie.

Hi there, I'd say at least 2-3 hours. Although I love history, I prefer to do museums in chunks otherwise, everything starts blending together. Maybe spend a little time there, then do one of the open bus tours which begin... More
