A free museum, admission only being a voluntary donation, nice and well laid out museum telling the story of New Zealand and present a good overview about the settlement of Christchurch. Especially I found it really interesting to learn about Maori culture and enjoyed to...More

The museum was clearly an old favourite with locals who were streaming in to see the Banksy exhibition. The main displays were relatively old fashioned compared to the exhibits at the much newer air force museum and Aucklnd's museum and war memorial, the latter having...More

Always enjoy our visits. Whether it is with children or overseas visitors, there is always something of interest. Love "The Street" . and the Paua House.

Undoubtedly my favourite museum in NZ. It's sure worth a visit if you are in the city, as beside the museum it's the well known Botanic Garden too. The entrance is free though donation is appreciated.

Nice museum with local history. Gorgeous location next door to the expansive botanic gardens. Easily accessible by the city loop tram.

Great little museum. Lots to see including a house decorated with 1600 shells in the lounge room. Very moving WW1 exhibit and the walk though 1900s Christchurch street and shops

Great location next to the gardens, tick two things off for the day. Gorgeous building housing so many interesting things. Did find the lay out a little confusing at times even with the map but well worth a couple of hours of wandering around. So...More

The museum is very well organised and interesting. It is great and didactic both for adults and children. The temporary exhibitions we saw were beautiful!

The layout is confusing, and the maps did not help greatly. Note to New Zealanders - all the maps refer to the entry floor as Level 1, not Ground Floor (the term used around New Zealand). This is no doubt helpful for overseas visitors, less...More

Hi there, I'd say at least 2-3 hours. Although I love history, I prefer to do museums in chunks otherwise, everything starts blending together. Maybe spend a little time there, then do one of the open bus tours which begin... More
