As in GB, rail cutbacks have been a boon to cyclists. This trails goes from the university town of Lincoln, across fields, besides swamp and lake and through history (read Gordon Ogalvie's books). Another pleasantry if you have the time.

The main reason I enjoy it is that its safer than riding on the road to Little River and is mostly flat. I have found as I have got older 58 that I am not as fast at riding it as I was. So for older people allow just over 1.5 hrs each way if you are leaving from Motukara.... More

This bike track is level and goes around two lakes beside the Port hills. The track is best suited to a mountain bike but would be manageable with a normal road bike. Although you can now start from Hornby, the best section is from the Motukarara station to Little River (about 20km). It's best to start from Motukarara and then... More

Great ride. Interesting history. Would recommend a visit in Spring or early Summer. Great views and free! Best riding Motukarara- Little River- Motukarara if you can't arrange a willing chauffeur to pick you up from the end. Good cafe in Little River with reasonable prices and railway memorabilia. Recommend for locals from 8- 50 years old.

This is a great ride for families. We took our 6 year old and he loved the museum at the start and then the bike ride across the bridges, round the lake and looking at all the birds. And lovely end to the day with a hot chocolate at the Little River Café!

Six of us went on this ride. Casual, relaxed and easy for most who can ride a bike. A flat ride with a few bumps and small bridges here and there which is a necessity to be interesting. You start with paddocks, the hills to the left and the Lake Ellesmere to the right almost amoungst the ducks and wildlife.... More

You need to pick your day for this excursion. Something to do with the shape of the hills, but it has to be one of the windiest places on Banks Paninsula and we were unlucky enough to get head winds in both directions. Little River is worth a visit. The views of the two lakes and their multitudes of water... More

Running beside the lake and through grasslands this bike trail is well worth a look on a clear day you can see across the lake to the mountains, a great photos opp. Its even cool to go when its foggy gives it a surreal feel.

A flat ride of 26 kms from Motukarara to Little River along the rail trail this is a worthwhile trip around the valleys of Banks Peninsula and along the edge of lakes Ellesmere and Forsyth. The destination of Little River affords a cafe and accommodation. For the adventurous, you can continue a further 28 kms over the hills to Hilltop... More

My wife and I completed the cycle trail today, the leg between Motukarara and Little River. Today was a perfect day, not windy and not too hot and sunny. It was an easy cycle being flat, and it was a very picturesque route. Really worth completing for all ages.
