The Heritage motel we stayed at was a disgrace. The room needed a complete make over. The sand flies were so horrendous we wished we never stayed .
The scenery is lovely but take heaps of mosquito spray.

The route from Franz Josef to Wānaka takes you through the Haast Pass.

Twisty winding roads , rivers, gorges, waterfalls . The best of Nee Zealand is seen on this road.

Incredible.

From Wanaka right through to Haast, the drive was spectacular. Our day was wet and misty, and this just added to the mystique of the drive. So many waterfalls, beautiful forrest walks and fabulous view points.
We chose not to stop in Haast due to mosquitoes and sand flies/ midges.

We climbed through here on a large holiday coach. All I can say is that I'm extremely glad not to have been the one doing the driving! The road really twists and turns through some heart-stopping hairpins up and down the gorge. The scenery is totally spectacular. There are occasional stopping/ viewing points, but there's not too much space. Wonderful.

Nice scenic drive. We stopped at Lake Hawea Lookout, Lake Wanaka lookout, Blue Pools, Fantail falls, Thundercreek falls,
The walk to the Blue Pools is nice. It says on the internet it is 3 km but it is more like 4.5 km.

It is only145 kms from Haast to Wanaka via the Pass, and takes a little over two hour to drive. We recently drove up the pass from our motel at Jackson Bay, and took nearly four hours to do so ... why? because the road passes through some spectacular scenery, with deep valleys, river torrents and breath taking views demanding us to stop!
Several years ago we drove the other way, from Lake Wanaka to Fox Glacier, and then the road was not sealed down the pass, with sharp corners on gravel to catch out the unwary drive. Today it is much improved, but we were delighted to find the old iron bridge that fords the River Haast half way up remains, offering a narrow, gulp inducing crossing of the angry river torrents. One stop that's a must is the Gates of Haast but you will be overwhelmed with choice including the glacial waters of the Blue Pools as you exit into the Makarora Valley shortly after Cameron Flat. The descent to Wanaka past Lake Hawea seems almost benign, after experiencing the alpine wonders of the Haast Pass.

For many the Haast Pass is the scenic drive from Wanaka to the glaciers, with a stop at the Blue Pools.
But if you do a little research you will see the drive is filled with fantastic sites, provided you’re prepared to stop often, and take a short walk.
In order, on the drive up from Haast, make sure you check out Depot Creek Falls (20 mins from Haast on the right, 200 walk metres walk), Roaring Billy Falls (23 mins from Haast on the left, signposted with car park, 15 mins walk on a flat track, but the rainforest scenery along the way is superb), Thunder Creek Falls (40 mins from Haast on the left, 5 mins walk to the right of the car park), Fantail Falls (45 mins from Haast on the right, 2 mins walk from the carpark).
And finally, the Blue Pools, which has heaps of parking, but is also popular with bus tours and day trippers from Wanaka and Queenstown. This is about a 40 minute walk each way.
There’s also plenty of places to pull over and admire the scenery, the bridges, river etc.
There are no shops or cafes between Haast and Makaroa, so stock up.

If you want some down time before venturing further, then Haast is the place for down-time, a lovely scenic bike ride or a cold beer or wine at the local Pub 'The Hard Antler'. If you are looking for resort styled 5 star waited on hand and foot treatment than Haast isn't for you. It is for a genuine untouch place to just lay back and take the stress of kind of place with very friendly welcoming locals AA++

We drove from Queenstpwn to Franz Josef in a day, stopping a myriad times to take photo's of the amazing scenery. So many reviews talk about the wonderful waterfalls, but the views of snowcapped peaks across the lakes are amazing. The Fantail and Thunder Creek Falls are great spots, just 5 mins walk from the road. REcommend to depoart Queenstown early, to allow enough time to enjoy the trip. Sunset was beautiful across the sea, shining onto the mountains. Highly recommend !

We were driven in a group with AATKings where the shoreline is charmingly lined with poplars and willows where it changes from alpine scenery to rainforest marvel, over Haast Pass.
