There are well defined walkways around the lake through a forest dripping with water. There's a huge variety of ferns and mosses everywhere, even clinging from the tops of the trees. There is plenty of wildlife to spot with large dragonflies skimming over the water and reed margins. Unfortunately, we visited on an overcast windy day so we didn't get... More

Take the time to do this walk, about 90 minutes round trip from the car park. If the weather is clear and there is not much wind then the views are just wonderful.

This is a lovely walk through a lovely forest to a reflective lake showing a reflection of the mountains. Well worth the effort as it is simply stunning.

Actually a lot of activities in NZ are very weather dependent. The reflection of the mountains in the lake for example depends heavy on the weather. The sky has to be perfectly clear, the lake has to be perfectly still. And only during certain months that those conditions are absolutely perfect. I started walking into the trail at about 8.50pm,... More

It was a glorious warm sunny day I must admit but the 1.5 hour walk around the lake was just what we needed. Beautiful shaded forest walk with amazing views of the lake and mountains. We had a bit of a breeze so the lake wasn't mirror like however it was a beautiful au to stretch the legs.

Get there super early for the best photos. The walk is relatively easy. Slightly faster to reach the lookout if you walk counter clockwise. Wear a hat or hood to keep the bugs away. Watch for cows on the road as you approach the parking lot. The three on the road today were hard to spot. Tripods recommended.

This spot was known for its reflective waters when still and that you can see Mt. Cook off in the distance on clear days. The day we went Mt. Cook could not be seen due to the low hanging fog. The track around the lake was pleasant and we got a few reflective pictures. Overall it was pretty but not... More

This is a great lake to visit if the weather is completely still and there are no clouds over the tops of the mountains as it offers some amazing reflections in the lake. The walk here from Fox Glacier isn't great but the walk around the lake is good! I'd strongly recommend taking some fly spray though as the Sand... More

If there is any chance there will be a clear sky in the morning, get out of bed and do yourself a great favour. It doesn't take long in the morning for the breeze to come up, when it does the lake starts to move, then the reflection pool is gone for another day. Even if you get there and... More

One thing I truly appreciate about New Zealand is the generosity of its tourism industry. Whenever something is classified as vaguely interesting to look at, Australians build a fence around it and put a ticket booth at the front. Not only are a great many attractions beautifully maintained and tastefully enhanced, they are free. There is a cafe and souvenir... More
