The walk around the lake is well laid out with well placed viewing points. Not an easy walk but doable if reasonably fit.

We really enjoyed the rainforest walk to the lake. The lake was really beautiful with view of the mountains. We couldn't see mt cook and some mountains were covered by cloud. It was windy so we couldn't see the mirror reflection but it is definitely worth the walk. If you are planning a trip to see this lake, go on... More

It was drizzling rain, so absolutely no chance of the famous mirror image, however the walk really was magical. We only went as far as the Jetty but the excellent path through ferns, soaring moss covered trees and path walls was spectacular. Took home some beautiful photos and memories of this special place.

You need a clear day to enjoy the views but the lake itself is pretty beautiful and the serenity is what makes it spectacular.

Located a short drive from Fox Glacier township, Lake Mathieson offers a great little walk with terrific views of the surrounding mountains and lake itself. Mostly on the flat except for a section of steps, the walk provides those lucky enough who go on a still day to see the reflection of the majestic mountains mirrored in the water. Go... More

On a clear and still day you will get superb views from this popular beauty spot. A choice of walks from the car park. Go all the way round if you can.

I visited here with the hope of getting some photos with the renowned reflections. Initially the lake had a breeze across the surface which didn't give me the reflections I was looking for but I did enjoy the walk around the lake through beautiful native bush and the birdsong. However I returned an hour or so later in time for... More

Though I personally consider lake pukaki to be the best lake in NZ, Matheson comes close not in terms of beauty but due to the spectacular reflections one can catch of the lake shoreline & background mountains on the water. On a clear day, one is rewarded with outstanding reflections of mount cook and the trees. The walk in itself... More

I don't get the attraction of this lake. It is a dirty puddle compared to lake Wanaka or lake hawea so maybe I am missing something. Has a walk around the lake which is ok and you haven't ever been on a walk outside of a prison yard before. Not worth going to in my opinion.

We didn't get to Lake Matheson until maybe 11 in the morning on a sunny day. It was a little windy, so we couldn't see the renowned reflections. We did a fair amount of other hiking while on the South Island, so in that context, I would not call this a "must see." We were fortunate enough to find prettier... More
