I checked out the old bank shopping arcade on Lambton Quay with a clock that, on the hour gives a rundown on local history instead of chiming, & the remains of the Inconstant/Plimmers Ark ship wreak that can be viewed through a glass floor. Most of the shops were closing when I got there.

The Old Bank Arcade is exactly that, a shopping arcade within the premises of a former bank. Evidence of the old banking chamber is there to behold - the classical columns, the high ornate ceilings, the stained timber, the tessellated tiles etc, all beautifully restored, and I thought this the most impressive aspect of the site. Nowadays the site is occupied by a line-up of very elegant and no doubt expensive boutique-style stores including several upmarket cafes. With not so much as a tile out of place, to me it was perhaps all a bit too perfect. For those who know the QVB in Sydney, the Old Bank restoration was apparently done by the same company

Went to see this beautiful historical building, from inside and out, stayed for a coffee in one of its many food outlets… didn’t fancy anything from the many clothing, soap, jewellery outlets within the building! Worth a visit for historians!

Remember this building when it was the BNZ and I worked at the opposition just down the road. Very much changed from a banking chamber but looks quite up-market and has plenty of food outlets as well as clothing outlets. Had a cup of tea before going upstairs to watch the clock on the hour - opens out and gives a run down on local history instead of chiming - interesting and worth a watch if your first time there. Weren't able to see the wreck downstairs as area was blocked off for some reason - but I'd seen it many years before.

This was a pleasant change from the sameness of most of the shopping along Lambton Quay. We enjoyed a coffee and double chocolate brownie at Smiths as well. It was good to see that Wellington cares for its heritage buildings.

When we first entered this very old, building with stunning architecture, we thought what a great way to use the building with a shopping arcade. We were then directed by our guide to the bottom floor where we we got to see the Inconstant ship wreck through a glass floor with signs explaining it's voyage and how it was found under the bank building. I bet hundreds of people never went down to see it but were in the building shopping.

This shopping arcade is impressive. It has several shops, businesses and food joints. The building is historical as it used to be formerly, Bank of New Zealand. Certainly worth visiting.

How fortunate we were to be taken to the Old Bank Shopping Arcade on our recent walking tour of Wellington city, this beautifully restored building was once the head office of the Bank of New Zealand. Today it has a collection of stores, businesses and eating establishments, on the lower level it is possible to view some of the remains of a historical sailing ship, The Inconstant, later known as Plimmers Ark, which were discovered during the restoration phase of the building. But a magical and somewhat hidden secret is the large musical clock which opens up on the hour, every hour, to display within a series of animated historical scenes, it was pretty special to view, best from the small viewing platform on the upper floor near the clock.

When wandering around central Wellington we came across the beautiful ''Old Bank Arcade''. What a great restoration project. Some great ''arty'' and upmarket boutique shops and tons of central coffee outlets. Similar to the Queen Victoria Centre in Sydney, the architects have kept the wonderful architecture of this early 20th century building and crafted it in to a great little shopping mall in downtown Wellington. A must see if you are strolling around Wellington Central.

Made a point of passing through and it was worth the effort. Every city should have one of these tasteful and attractive shopping arcades in an excellent and interesting restoration.
