About
We offer a range of ways for people to visit Parliament. You are welcome to take part in one of our free guided tours, take a map to self-guide around our grounds, or watch the debating chamber in action in the public galleries. On our tours you will explore the Parliament buildings, learn about the Parliamentary process in New Zealand, and find out how you can participate in our democracy. Along the way, you will see some of the many artworks and objects from the Parliamentary Collection, and get to know the details behind the iconic architecture. Tours are free, and operate throughout each day, seven days per week. We recommend booking all of our tours in advance, as numbers are strictly limited and we cannot guarantee you a space on a tour if you do not have a booking. Tour times and availability are on the Guided Tours page of our website, along with links to book, and more information about what to expect from your visit.

Superb tour with a very smart guide
We don't have kids, however, there were kids on our tour, and the guide was quite attentive to make the tour fun for them. We quite a bit and learned a lot (we are from the US). The building is gorgeous and stately, and you get to see, and enter, the press room, the unicameral debate chamber, one of the public committee rooms for citizen input, etc. Interesting and family-friendly.

    Informative and entertaining.
Visited the Beehive for the tour of the New Zealand Parliament in Wellington and we weren’t disappointed. Our guide, Rob, was both informative and entertaining. The Beehive is impressive and the tour gives you access to most of the important areas while Rob provided both a comprehensive explanation of how Parliament functions without it being too complicated - his interaction with the group was friendly but efficient. A must-do for anyone visiting Wellington.

    Excellent and informative tour
Booked on line for the free tour. Our guide Kim was excellent. Her explanations of the NZ electoral system were impressive, clear and concise. Given it was a Sunday we were able to visit everywhere in the beehive and the parliament building. The architecture of both is impressive. Would highly recommend including a tour on your Wellington itinerary

    Little Library Museum
I took the library museum self guided tour. It was brilliant. You can read everything in 30 minutes and it was so informative with some beautiful artworks and old pieces of history. I did not know Prince Edward came here in the 1930's before he was crowned King - and I did not know NZ girls could legally be married at the age of 12 before the 1930's! Worth a visit. And if the cafe is open to the public - good reasonable pricing for food.

    Excellent tour
We booked to go on a tour of the parliament buildings and were not disappointed. Our guide was knowledgeable , friendly and helpful. This was a fascinating insight to the workings of the New Zealand parliament. The tour is free but booking ahead is advised.

    Well worth a visit
We had a fantastic tour around the Parliament building today led by Janet, a knowledgeable and welcoming guide. We learnt not only about the buildings but also about the processes in parliament - very interesting. Old parliament building is beautiful and it was fascinating to hear about the renovations that make the building more prepared to withstand earthquakes.

    A Wonderful experience
Amazing tour by an outstanding tour guide. Our grandson loved the opportunity to stand at the lectern that became a household known view, after all the Covid updates. A place every New Zealand should visit as it is our own place.

    Informative
Took 1 hour guided tour of parliament. It is free but you need to schedule in advance. I signed up in the am for a pm tour. Guide did a nice job of talking the group through the complex, explaining and providing time to take pictures. Only about 20 people are allowed at a time. Be prepared to check in your purse, backpack and any other bags, as well as hats. You can carry your cell.

    Outside View
Walking around the Parliament Buildings is very pleasant in the early morning light when there are only a few people around. The buildings are impressive and there are other pieces related to Māori and colonial culture close by. Access to the area is relatively free.

    The Beehive!
This review was just a quick visit to the exterior of the buildings, in particular the "Beehive". As an architect it was interesting to see such a different formed building, next door to the traditional parliament building typology. The precinct around it included a nice park and the cenotaph, and there is a playground for the kids as well. Worth a visit, just to walk around. We may try an inside tour next time we visit.

I took the half hour tour. Jennifer was knowledgable and I was impressed to hear her speak French, Spanish and Chinese as well as English and Maori to the group. It was interesting to see the chamber and inside the buildings and compare them to the British Parliament and to hear about how the history of the NZ Parliament and how the building came to be built. The security staff were polite and friendly.

The tour proof to be very popular, you MUST book for a place.

our guide, Kim, was very informative and easy going, so the information relayed was not boring but interesting. We learned a lot about NZ that day.

Great Experience

We visited the place casually without any bookings, but saw the information board at the entrance about the times for free tours. So, we made an on-the-spot booking for 'Kids in the House' guided tour that went for 45 minutes. The tour started with a short video then the guide took us around different rooms at the Parliament House. The guide was very informative, and encouraged questions and interactions, especially from the children. My daughter and other children on the tour loved it, and we learnt a lot about the NZ history and their politicians. It was very educational and time well spent!

I had seen mention of "the Beehive" as a point of reference when traveling around downtown Wellington. I didn't really understand its significance. That ignorance disappeared when our city tour guide took us to the parliamentary campus. He explained that the parliament building was where the government met for legislative purposes but that the Beehive was the actual offices of the legislators including the office of the Prime Minister.

Architecturally the two buildings could not be more different. If you consider the third building on the campus, the Parliamentary Library, you see the trifecta of the inner workings of the New Zealand national government.

If visiting Wellington, it is well worth contacting Parliament in advance to book on one of their free tours.
The organisation was very efficient and the guide extremely knowledgeable.
We were able to visit the main parts of the building including the voting chamber and found out a lot about the voting system and workings of government.
Absolutely excellent tour.

Highly recommend this tour if you visit Wellington. Took our 2 young kids (7 & 10 year old) who throughly enjoyed it.
Rob our tour guide was very knowledgeable and went above and beyond including playing and singing happy birthday to our son.
Enjoyed visiting all of the key rooms including the debating room, the press room where they hold the daily covid press conferences and the great hall.
We weren’t expecting to enjoy it as much as we did with my partner saying it had been a real highlight.
No photos are allowed to be taken during the tour but we quite liked that.
Definitely a must do in Wellington!

A spontaneous visit as we walked home after a long day.

I haven't been into Parliament Buildings for over 45 years when my father used to work there.

We did the free 30 minute tour with Kim, who took us a few more places and went a bit longer - we were lucky numbers were light. She is very knowledgeable and taught us some fascinating facts, even though we thought we knew quite a lot already.

It was quite emotional going into the Debating Chamber having only seen in on TV before. I would thoroughly recommend this tour for all New Zealanders - possibly one of the most significant things I have done as an adult.

We took the one-hour (it lasted 70 minutes, and every single one was wonderful) tour with Tim. He was extremely knowledgeable and easy-going, We had some Dutch people among our group, and Tim was keen to show the gift, from the Dutch government, of a sculpture of Abel Tasman's ship. Tim was aware of similarities between German & New Zealand systems of proportional representation voting systems, and of the existence of Canada's senate. A fascinating building, and a great guide!

It is well worth booking ahead to ensure you don’t miss out on this excellent free tour of the Parliamentary buildings. Tours run for 1 hour.

Jim our tour guide was very welcoming and knowledgeable. The buildings are very interesting architecturally, technically (earthquake management system right at the end of the tour) and politically (understanding the NZ system).

Unfortunately you can’t take photos on the tour. Be ready to check in all your kit before commencing the tour.

Very highly recommended.

We took a free tour of the parliamentary buildings. You should ring up in advance to make sure of your preferred slot. The tours run on the hour from 10.00 am. Our guide was a very bubbly and funny lady (Violeta?)from Poland. It was very informative and they are clearly very proud of the lead they have taken eg first country to give women the vote.
