Well presented museum with fantastic displays. Can’t believe the level of presentation for a free entry! Saw the Gallipol and nature exhibits - would have loved to look at more but we ran out of time due to previous commitments. Well worth a visit - could easily spend a whole day here.

Absolutely fabulous, informative, interesting and emotive.
The Maori exhibits were superbly laid out telling a good and fully story right up to present time, linking back recent history of migration of Pacific people's. Some of it is quite emotional. It seems to me be very open in dealing with the history of European settlement, and quite rightly so. This added to my growing understanding and appreciation of these events, but still do much more to absorb. You can very easily return here multiple times. Fantastic.

    Well done, Wellington!
A big museum; you can spend at least half a day here if not more. The museum is very family friendly. Kids will love it (be prepared for a lot of people and happy noise). I would definitely go here for a family outing. There is a lot to see. Bring your camera. There may be a line at the earthquake house, however, it is worthwhile.

Varied museum....worth a visit especially for kids and if raining
Very interesting museum. Covers a lot of areas relating to NZ. Particular recommendation is the Gallipoli exhibit. The models from WETA were outstanding and the information panels and interactive areas were really well done. As the museum is free to go into it is a great activity to spend some time especially if the weather is not great. Kids will love it.

A must see if you’re in Wellington
We were staying in the QT hotel a few minutes walk away so it was an easy decision to visit the museum. We were very impressed by the quality of the museum, particularly as it’s free (we did make a donation at the end, given the scale and quality of it). We did a couple of hours in the morning, covering the settler/species theme and the excellent Gallipoli exhibition, and then returned in the afternoon after a slightly warm walk up to the Botanic gardens (the operative word being ‘up’). We then visited the top floor viewing gallery for a good view of the bay (slightly obscured by the safety glass) and visited the Māori cultural exhibition. It was all done to a very high standard, it’s not crowded and (despite being Londoners used to free museums) we were amazed it’s free.

    Outstanding museum
This is a must do in Wellington. The building is architecturally beautiful and the various exhibition spaces are extremely well curated. It is a great leaning experience, especially about Māori culture The Anzac exhibition was outstanding. It gave an excellent insight into the disastrous invasion. The 2.4 times incredibly lifelike figures of the individuals whose stories were featured was really moving. We basically spend a day exploring with a break in the cafe

    An emotional and cultural experience
You shouldn't really miss the opportunity of visiting this brilliant museum on the quay in Wellington. It is quite diverse in nature drawing together Maori culture, the coming of the white European settlers, the impact upon the eco structure of the islands by both cultures and the disaster that was Gallopoli. The brilliant interactive experiences of a modern museum add to the Impact of a learning experience. It's not to be missed.

    Amazing museum
Walked here from a shuttle stop from our cruise ship expecting to stay about and an hour. This is the most amazing museum I have ever seen. Be prepared, you won’t want to leave. 5 floors and 3 hours later, we tore ours away as we only had one day in Wellington and wanted to see a bit more.

    Wonderful
We went twice. Once when we arrived & again because our walking tour the next day mentioned the earthquake simulator which we missed. The place is so beautiful & well laid out. All the staff so helpful & friendly. The 2nd time, there was an alarm & we had to evacuate the building.

    Gate One Tour Group
We were on a Gate One Tour and this was definitely one of the highlights. The first floor has some amazing figures of the Battle of Gallipoli. Other things we found very interesting --the earthquake exhibit, the taxidermied animals, the mineral/rock collection, the Maori exhibit.

There is a lot to see and do to keep you entertained and busy here.
The history, the art, topics and archaeological objects, native wildlife are all very interesting and worthwhile, especially when it is for FREE. You only have to pay for the fashion area which I did not see.
I strongly recommend allowing yourself at least a few hours to give you plenty of time because it is a very large place with several levels. If you have large items, bags or clothing items you do not wish to carry you can leave them in a baggage area which is safe, secure and convenient.
There is a large parking area for those that drive a decent souvenir shop and 2 cafes on different floors.

This is a free museum located in Wellington’s harbor area. Our group opted for a 90 minute guided tour which offered us more insight and was worth the cost. There was so much to see that we eventually spent a total of 4 hours here. Many of the exhibits are interactive, and children will also find things that interest them here. Our favorite exhibit was the nature section, but the Gallipoli exhibit about New Zealand’s involvement in WWI was also interesting.

Very spacious museum with excellent services within. I was able to use a mobility scooter which helped me get around this large museum. Amazingly this museum is free. You do pay for guided tours, but that is optional. They have excellent displays about the history and culture of the Maori people. Also, the single best war exhibit of a single war campaign I have ever seen is their Gallipoli exhibit about the WWI campaign in Turkey that had major participation from Australian and New Zealand troops. The stories of several participants are told in detail, in part using lifelike giant figures that are so well done they absolutely look real. Each of their stories are depicted and as you go through the exhibit, the entire two month campaign is covered chronologically. This exhibit is always busy, and the impact on the Kiwi people who visit is palpable. The mood is somber as visitors try to take in what happened in this tragic campaign that in the end, failed. There are also many other great exhibits in the museum. The Polynesian migration across the Pacific is covered, not only to New Zealand, but also to other Pacific islands. There are natural history exhibits, geologic exhibits, and native animal exhibits including a rare display of an actual giant squid. Also, the Europeon migration to New Zealand is covered in detail up to and beyond the Waitangi Treaty. If you want to see a museum that is truly educational, Te Papa is the place to go. I highly recommend.

I didn’t do all the museum due to lack of time so focused on levels two and three. The displays were good and the explanations of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes were interesting. The chance to experience an earthquake in a house was great. You need to allow sufficient time to do this museum if you want to do it fully maybe half a day. It is free entry to most exhibits and there is a cafe on site but there are also at least three other eating places within easy walking distance.

Te Papa is a fascinating place to gain an insight into the history and culture of New Zealand especially the Maori culture. Its free for the main exhibits though some specialist elements have an entry charge. It will take you at least 3 - 4 hours to view all the exhibits. The cafe is located on the ground flow and serves a good range of meals. It's a great rainy day experience.

We had an organised tour, courtesy of Grand Pacific Tours 19 day New Zealand highlights tour (would never use them again, courier made everyone’s life he’ll). We had an early entry arranged which was great as we got to see an exhibition before everyone else was allowed in.

Te Papa in Wellington is a huge place and one could easily spend a day there. There is much to see and do and it’s a good place to take children as well as there are moving exhibits. The earthquake house is interesting to experience if you’ve never experienced one.

The museum is very airy and spacious and has a cafe which serves reasonably priced food.

We visited the Maori & Gallipoli exhibitions and were very impressed. Whilst the Maori part was all a bit confusing with there being so much information to take in, the Gallipoli section was absolutely brilliant. The story of the battle was extensive, detailed and very well put together and the figures of the participants, which were probably three times the size of regular humans, undoubtedly were the crowning glory. We had a brief wander in the shop and took in the small but informative section relating to the structure of the museum in relation to its ‘earthquake proof-ness’. All this for free. Bravo.

Guided tour is probably a must to get the most out of a limited time. Could easily fill in a a whole day here and the Cafe serves excellent range offood at reasonable prices, so no need to leave the Museum for a rest & munchies. Awesome displays and intensely proud of their Maori seafaring Heritage. Very easy to lose track of time, displays are well presented.

Did a guided tour first which was pre-booked and a great way of getting orientated and gives an idea on what to come back to see more of because there is so much information and so many things to do. Our Kiwi guide had returned to NZ from Scotland some 3 years earlier and was witty and informative as she gave snapshots of different parts in different areas of the Museum. She had an impressive knowledge base and made the place come alive for our group. Many thanks! We did the ANZAC area some time later and it is brilliant display and such a sobering and emotional tour depicting the heroics and the futility of war. Very moving ….

It was a cold and rainy day that drew us from the quayside into the museum, and we wish we had arrived earlier. We were able to take in the Nature and Gallipoli exhibits (Level 3) and the world of Maori and Treaty of Waitangi exhibits (Level 4) in the four hours we were there before the museum closed. With schools closed for Christmas, it was busy on the lower levels but quieter as the afternoon went on. Nike Savvas' Finale: Bouquet exhibit was a delight, as were the series of 4 short videos that had once toured schools in the Treaty room. This is a great musuem, well laid out and fascinating. The Gallipoli Exhibit in particular with its animated battle maps and Weta Workshop-made set pieces were impressive. Definitely a must for tourists wishing to learn more about New Zealand.
