KiwiRail Scenic is New Zealand's only long distance passenger train network. We take passengers across New Zealand in comfort and style through some of the most scenic areas of the North and South Islands. It is an experience not just a journey. The Northern Explorer between Auckland & Wellington is a unique journey through the heart of the North Island, through an array of changing landscapes of sea coasts, farmlands, river viaducts and the central volcanic plateau. The service operates a 6 day timetable, departing Auckland on Monday, Thursday and Saturday and Wellington on Tuesday, Friday & Sunday.

Book early if you go in heavy season. November had plenty of seats. Easy check in, get seat assignments, drop your bags and get on. You can buy food on train but order early as they run out of popular items. Or you can purchase food at the New World grocery right in the station and carry it on. The... More

The Northern Explorer is a superbly staffed scenic train ride from Wellington to Auckland, with great pastoral views and informative audio tour vignettes about local settlement history, rail engineering and geography over the 10 hour ride. An open air viewing car is available at the rear of the train (windy and adventuresome, keep your stance wide and our center of... More

Paraparaumu to Auckland on the Northerner is one of the nicest ways to see our countryside. The Northerner meanders through fields, bush and townships in a relaxed way and is my choice of travel. Seats are comfortable, the ride is smooth and the food is great. One can even partake of an alcoholic tipple!

to watch the world go by! It is a bit pricey, but I managed to save a bit of money by checking out man in seat 61 if booking outside NZ ;-) It's something that you should do at least one time. Seating was really comfy, views were beautiful through the huge windows, unless of course it rains .... Food... More

Found station easy boarding easy too. Food was okay (it is all prepackaged). Wine selection good. Expect rolling hills, native bush, spectacular snow topped mountains, rural scenes. There is power but note there is no wifi. There is a open air carriage which is good if you need to stretch your legs or get some fresh air. I believe that... More

This train trip up the centre of the North Island of New Zealand is great. It passes through stunning scenery, with good service and plenty of food options. Comfortable seating and a good observation carriage for the restless traveller.

Took the train from Auckland to Wellington. The service is decent enough, with carriages including both airline style and four-around-a-table seating. I was in a party of two and we were allocated an entire table just for the 2 of us, which was nice. It would be cramped with more than two however. Food is ok, with decent selection for... More

Being a train fan i could not visit New Zealand without experiencing the Northern Explorer. We stayed overnight in Auckland to be up early to get to the station , a smooth and efficient check in ,baggage went in the baggage waggon and we then took our seats. Great journey however because the weather was so bad there were parts... More
