We take passengers across New Zealand in comfort and style through some of the most scenic areas of the North and South Islands. It is an experience not just a journey. The Northern Explorer between Auckland & Wellington is a unique journey through the heart of the North Island, through an array of changing landscapes of sea coasts, farmlands, river viaducts and the central volcanic plateau. The service operates a 6 day timetable, departing Auckland on Monday, Thursday and Saturday and Wellington on Tuesday, Friday & Sunday.

We went to the Wellington train station to catch a train to Martinborough to tour the wineries. The train took about an hour to get there. Very scenic and travels down the gulf then through the valleys and small towns. We got off at Featherstone and our wine tour picked us up. Lots of fun and comfortable on the train.... More

We were very lucky with the weather which was gloriously sunny all day, showing off the views and scenery to maximum advantage, Friendly and helpful staff, comfortable seats with big panoramic windows. Helpful audio commentary and also open viewing car to allow you to get even closer to the landscape. Absolutely the best way to travel between Auckland and Wellington... More

Yes, yes, yes..... why wouldn't you.... A nice relaxing time, which got us in the holiday mood. Perfect for you to see nz and hear about it. I felt entertained all the way. Take snacks and bits of for the kids but my 2 year old loved it.

I went into this with high expectations, and unfortunately was quite disappointed. Half of this was due to inclement weather, meaning we could see almost nothing of the countryside around us, which was a massive downer. Not blaming this on KiwiRail obviously, as they cannot change the weather, it just took away from the overall experience. The loss of a... More

We decided to travel from Auckland to Wellington on the Northern Explorer, as my wife loves train travel. Our flight from Singapore was delayed, and we did not get to the Holiday Inn Auckland Airport till 2 am . We had to leave the hotel at 5.30 am that day, as we had to convert our vouchers to train tickets.... More

The train was very comfortable as it was a 4 hour journey. Good temperature, spacious cabin and seats. We loved the viewing deck at the back. It was very windy outside but the views were fabulous. We went out there a few times during the journey. Large windows so we could see everything, good informative narration using the individual headphones... More

Nice seats, staff were helpful food was expensive, but at least I got to eat. They had a really tasty Gluten Free Wrap. Also we went on December 15th so was just lovely they had a Big Christmas Tree near the café. Would definitely go on this KiwiRail Northern Explorer train again. They take your bags at the check in,... More

I have wanted to travel on the Northern Explorer trip for several years now and loved it! Seats were spacious, views from the windows fabulous and staff so helpful and friendly. We did not book ahead for food and snacks and were assured by the cafe this was not necessary. They had a plentiful selection of food all day even... More
