The archive was formed by the amalgamation of the New Zealand Film Archive Nga Kaitiaki O Nga Taonga Whitiahua, Sound Archives Nga Taonga Korero and the Television New Zealand Archive. Together the film, television and radio collections are cared for by specialist staff, and in dialogue with each other tell richer stories about New Zealand and its peoples.

Nga Taonga Sound & Vision holds a large and diverse collection of moving image and audio items, along with related documentation. The collections span Aotearoa's sound and moving image history - from the earliest days of cinema, audio recording and television, to contemporary film, television, advertisements, music videos, computer games and radio productions.

The Nga Taonga Sound & Vision Wellington head office has weekly cinema screenings from Wednesday to Saturday nights, a cafe, a gallery space and a searchable online catalogue and medialibrary viewing area - it's a great place to spend a few hours or even a couple of weeks.

A choice morsel, compact and delightful.

Arriving for the Guatemalan movie "Ixcanul," I enjoyed a pre-show snack along with an exhibit on a NZ soap opera, one of several integrated into the cafe. After the movie, the adjacent gallery lured me into an exhibition on early feature films in Wellington for a further 20 minutes. You don't need to be a film buff to enjoy Nga... More

Nga Taonga Sound and Vision bought old film footage of early Maori. The films were shown in local Marae, great ambience! Films were of mutton birders, eeling, hangi and many more, very interesting. Entry was by gold coin donation

I took my young kids to a screening of the Gruffalo over the school holidays. It was a deal where you pay $6/adults & children pay their age 2 years = $2 etc. It was such a great idea for kids that aren't quite ready to watch long kids' movies at the cinema & a great option on a cold/wet... More

I visited the film archive for the first time in October 2013 and spent an interesting afternoon (2-3 hours and could have stayed longer). There are a large number of films, documentaries, old news reels, sports reports television advertisements etc which can be watched for free; so plenty of cater for all interests. It is probably of most interest to... More

We wandered in because my husband had read about this in a guide book. We each chose short films to watch and enjoyed a quiet hour learning about cultural New Zealand. There may have been more to explore but there was no guides or docents. Price was right so if you don't like it you can leave without guilt.

Saw a superb 1953 film about the first ascent of Everest, while drinking some coffee from the cafe - the friendly staff even found me a tube for a poster I'd bought elsewhere earlier!

The Film Archive is a great place to stop by for a couple of hours. There are hundreds of hours of archived films available at the click of a button, and this has really helped me get under the skin of the local psyche. As well as the Media Library, the Film Archive also screens a wide range of cultural... More
