Totally not worth visiting. The carvings were done as a tourist attraction in the 1980’s. My expectation was that these were old carvings that had been discovered. #wrong. Disappointing and not worth the visit.

We took a catamaran cruise to the carvings , which are just around a point to the west of town and only visible or viewable from the water. These ar enot historical, but were made in recent times by an artist undeer strenuously challenging conditions. The designs are nice but not stunning, some were hard ot see at times. You motor out with the captain telling you a little history, and then he goes up to the carvings, you see them and it takes a couple minutes, although he tries to stay longer. Out cruise added in fishing for trout, which seemed pretty strange addon and irrelevant, but it is a big deal in Lake Taupo. I would suggest looking into kayaking out if you are more adventurous, or a cheaper tour. Alternatively, skipping the tour and buying a postcard might be a good option.

We went with my mom and niece that visit us from overseas and all of us enjoyed the trip very much.
This is an easy short trip that you can do with family and friends on a good sunny day. The cruise at 1.30pm include a short demonstration of trout fishing. We didn’t catch any, but it was still a nice experience which ended with the crew handing out samples of smoke trout fish from their previous trip.
If I may comment, the commentary (which was very interesting) was too loud inside the boat. Other than that, it’s highly recommended.

These are only visible if you are in some sort of water craft. You can walk to within 100 metres of them but they are inaccessible from the land.

Joined a guided tour with taupo Kayaks to the rock carving . Round trip is meant to be 10k but it didn't feel that long.

Water is crystal clear and was very calm the day we went.

The size of the carving is pretty impressive and definitely worth the visit .
Interesting the carvings are only 48years old !!

This trip was best when the engine was switched off and we proceeded under sail. A most informative skipper showed us the carvings and an insight into the geology and landscape of Lake Taupo. Highly recommended

Not ancient carvings but still well worth seeing and the boat ride was enjoyable. There are number of options to get there. We went with Chris Jolly Outdoors tour boat. Resonable cost and captain was knowledgeable and kept things fun.

Lovely cruise and interesting rock carving.

I would definately recommend seeing this Moari art, only accessible by boat. I was on a boat trip but there were people there in small boats , canoes, and even paddle boards.

Definately worth a look

You need to do a boat cruise to see these or have your own boat but they are well worth it. They are in a lovely sheltered bay and well worth the trip.
