We decide to climb Mt Tauhara while recently in Taupo. Relatively close to Taupo but not well marked how to get there. If you’re young and fit it’s probably an enjoyable hike. 6 km return and very steep. The trail is not maintained and this...More

This is a fantastic hike, but wanted to leave a bit more info so others are aware of what to expect, as I was somewhat unprepared. First, expect to get really wet unless its a super dry day. It was just a slightly cloudy and...More

From the car park at the bottom of the mountain you first walk through some farmland to get to the base of the mountain. Then it is a steady climb up to the top, and occasionally through the trees you can see some lovely views....More

The views are nice up the top but little to no view on the way up. It was 3km to the summit on my garmin not the advertised 2.5km. Pretty much up the whole way took us 55mins to the top with a few stops...More

I gotta be honest - I did not run up Tauhara, or even walk it. Kelly ran up. She had set her eyes on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing before we left South Africa. But the web site’s weather showed -2degC and 85km/h winds, which makes...More

Nice short half day hike. It takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes to hike up (including short breaks), less to hike down. The first 15 minutes are through farmland and already offer great views of Lake Taupo and Tongariru in the distance. The rest is...More

We were a group of six women, in our early 50's. We managed this walk quite easily but we are all walkers. You do need a decent level of fitness. It took us three hours return and that included a 20 minute stop. It is...More

A short climb of an hour or two takes you up through some lovely rolling green fields, then into the trees, full of lots of birds (eg tui). Before the trees, or in the gaps, you get good views of Taupo.

You walk across the farmland to the start, there was signage at the start & we then opened & closed a farm gate & set off towards the right . So yes you can walk on the private farmland but it's not for very long.
