Lovely bush walks on either side of the Napier Taupo road. Ten minutes from Taupo and indicated by blue picnic sign with a tree above it. The walk on the left side is a 30 minute loop track and you can also walk up to the cemetary which is about 10 minutes from the car park. The 30 minute track... More

We tramped there on two occasions during our visit. Luckily we were accompanied by my father in law who knew almost every tree and shrub we saw. This is old growth New Zealand with some trees 800 -1000 years old. You have to see to believe the beauty!

We thoroughly enjoyed our walk into the Opepe Bush Historic Reserve. It is located on the Taupo to Napier road, about 10 minutes drive from Taupo. We actually got sore necks from looking up so much at the huge native trees. Rimu, Matai, Miro etc etc plus it was so good to have information signs in front of the big... More

Found this reserve almost by accident and what a find. Did both walks and enjoyed both, the huge trees on the north walk are fantastic and the less mature forest on the longer south walk was equally interesting. Lots of birds on both sides and we really appreciated the great signage of the trees on the north walk.

We walked on the southern side and included the cemetery. What a peaceful place full of history. Came back to motel and read story. The bush walk was lovely and peaceful. Native trees with descriptions plenty of native birds singing.

A rare chance to see mature native trees. The half-hour walk from the parking strip reveals native trees at their spectacular mature height and girth. As a Wellington resident, I had seen young rimu and matai in the Botanic Garden, but never experienced the majesty of the mature species (some take hundreds of years to reach maturity). In this reserve... More

Beautiful views of the foliage and mountains and rivers can be seen in this reserve. You can visit for a little bit or take a picnic lunch and pack in-just be sure to leave only footsteps behind. Kiwis are very tidy people!

Great little walk.approx 10 mins drive from Taupo. 45 minute round trip. Takes in historical redoubt site. Could do with info board at the actual village. Photos are on the Web. We had hail on the walk, however, under canopy cover it didn't matter

Great bush walks, many trees have labels and described in full. Beautiful, well cared walkways. Easy access. Informative in the military part of the walk.
