The volcanic activity centre is very small and does not offer enough interactive displays for kids, so I think that this activity is not well suited to younger kids. Our boys are 2 & 4 years and they were bored. we spent $36 for 3 adults and we were only there for approx 20 minutes. They offer a lot of... More

We took our kids here on a slightly rainy Taupo afternoon and would highly recommend it. Friendly staff welcomed us and we enjoyed spending a good amount of time looking at the informative displays. The modern display on earthquakes was really good - the kids loved the earthquake simulator. The videos, while dated, were very informative and interesting. Enough here... More

The Volcanic Activity Centre is a small but interesting display of various matters volcanic. They have rock samples from some eruptions around the area, several displays, an interactive map to highlight various features and provide an explanation of them, an earthquake video and chamber where you can experience what a 6.3 earthquake feels like, and a model that explains how... This is a small centre filled with a lot of really good information. My husband and I pulled into the centre and thought that we may not be there long. Well we spent over an hour and it was November 13. The following morning, November 14 we experienced the strongest earthquake to ever hit New Zeland, 500 km from the... More

Good up to date information on how volcanoes work. The kids loved it and loved comparing the weight of the different rocks.

This is one of the indoor activities in Taupo that gets you away from the weather extremes. (Lava Glass, White Water World, Taupo Museum, Crafty TROUT Brewery Tours, and Starlight Cinema). This place is even interesting for even the Non-closet-volcanologists out there. Videos and try the Earthquake room. A must do in Taupo, especially when Taupo is the Biggest SUPER... More

Interesting & informative wall displays on previous earthquakes & volcanic eruptions in New Zealand from the past. Liked the model of New Zealand and the push buttons with LED lights so you can immediately locate where an island offshore is and where the volcanoes are situated. My Son (a Geologist in the making) loved the different rocks and wanted to... More
