Interesting to see the transformation from dry riverbed to rushing white water river in seconds. Mid viewpoint is good for close up. Top vie point for the whole picture. Come 10 minutes before the gates opens. Worth the drive from Taupo.

Mighty River Power releases thousands of litres of water into these rapids several times a day (10am, noon and 2pm at time of writing). The narrow gorge fills spectacularly and very quickly. We were so taken by it that we came back the next day...More

It's neat to see where they filmed. You can see the rapids from 3 different places. The mid viewing point is the best. The horn will sound before they open the dams. You don't need much time but parking is limited.

Be sure to visit at water release times...... 10 12 2 o'clock. The water gradually squeezes through this dry, rocky, and narrow chasm, until it is a wild, white, gushing torrent!! Truly spectacular !

This visit was great. The siren goes off before the dam opens and when the water is let loose its a site you just have to see, hear and feel.

The only time to visit these rapids is at 10 12 2 or 4 when they open the dam gates. The water flows for just 15 mins so plan your trip a head. We were there on a rainy 4pm and there were only a...More

The times the gates are opened are published in different brochures. We visited at 10AM. And it was impressive to see the build-up of the water, turning into a wild stream. Before the gate opens, a siren gives a warning at different stages before the...More

The dam is opened up to 4 times daily to let water out for electricity. The rocks below are fairly dry and once the dam is opened the area turns into rapids! Quite a sight!
