If you are not afraid of heights and want the best view of New Plymouth and also Mount Taranaki, climb up to the top of Paritutu Rock. Be warned it is very steep from halfway up and you need good shoes or hiking boots. Very rocky and narrow path to the top. Many times two people cannot pass each other.... More

Finally got round to climbing Paritutu and ended up doing it on a windy day! We were pleased to find that we were sheltered from the wind the whole way up which helped heaps! It's up up up all the way as you've probably figured but well worth the effort and overall, found it wasn't nearly as hard as we'd... More

This is an amazing place to visit. Great for couples, singles or families. A cool sand dune to go down. Staircase to the beach below with postcard quality views of the Sugar loaf islands and Paratutu Rock. We even got a close up view of seals laying in the sun and playing in the water.

Great place to visit. You can run down the dunes at Back Beach, or go surfing/swimming - also during good weather, you can climb up Paritutu Rock but this is not for the faint of heart. Wear good shoes and be relatively fit to climb since the very top there are no stairs - only a link chain to hold... More

After a day in Pukekura Park it was great to see the sea, so to speak. We didnt climb Paritutu Rock but did have a great view of the islands and looking back at the city. You can also see Mt Taranaki from here as well which is cool. We drove further around the coast and got some cool shots... More

Not for the faint hearted if you go beyond the wooden steps and then you hang onto the chain while you find your footing. We left the older member with the dog and must admit he was happy with the view from where the wooden steps end but the view from the top was great but the mountain was covered... More

If you don't mind a bit of a climb this 500ft rock is well worth the effort as from the top there are panoramic views in all directions. Over the city ,the port, along the coast to Oakura, Mt Taranaki and the Sugar loaf Islands. There is a good surf beach at the rocks base and good picnic spots too.... More

Attacked it late in the day. About 370 steps then a rock climb with chain rope. If an old fart like me can do it then most people of reasonable fitness can. Fantastic views out over the Sugar Loafs and all inland. Beautiful views
