We were lucky to do this walk on an almost perfect day. Path was in good condition overall and views outstanding.

This is a really good walk. The info on the DOC site makes this walk seem extreme and only suitable for experienced trampers, which is not the case and in our opinion, it is a great family walk. A good level of fitness and sturdy footwear is advisable as the track is steep and slippery at times. Supervise children carefully as at a couple of points, there are steep cliffs on the edge of the track, although these are fenced. There are nice views of the colourful crater lake and vents too. The views from the top are also excellent- many of lakes of Rotorua, Tarawera and the mountains of Tongariro National Park. We expected it to be a steep uphill gradient all the way to the top but honestly most of the climb was a shallow gradient. Most of the walk was also in the bush, so there was plenty of shade from the sun. It took us about 15 minutes to walk to the crater lake and a further 50 minutes to the summit. Slightly less time on the way down. A thoroughly enjoyable walk, one of our highlights of our trip to Rotorua. Toilet is available at the car park.

One of the better hikes in the area and we did most of them. Track leads you through the trees and up the mountain to the summit. Took us about 50 minutes to the top and about 40 minutes back. It will require a good level of fitness and some sturdy shoes as the track is relentlessly uphill from about the 30 minute mark. We loved the challenge and the sweating as the rewards when we got to the top were breathtaking. 360 degree views and they are stunning. Shame I don’t live nearby, I would be challenging myself each week to try to get to the top faster each time.

It’s a 3km walk up and back down and both have their challenges but the wonderful view at the top is very worth it.

Really enjoyed walking to this beautiful crater lake on a recent visit to Rotorua. Worth stopping off SH5 to take a short walk to this lake especially if you haven't seen these sights in Rotorua during your stay. There is a toilet at start of track and an interesting information board as well as a carpark. Don't leave any valuables in sight though as there was a smashed windscreen there when we arrived. My husband made be carry my handbag.

Two kids in tow and quite the slope to the top, this was our BEST morning in Rotorua. What a view to be rewarded with !! The kids were so proud and the trek is just as beautiful on the way down as it is on the way up!! Bring sturdy shoes!!

The location is pretty and the walk is achievable however try to get acclimatised to altitude before doing it. You can rent a horse for the easy party of the walk and not the hard part. The red valley is also good to see but maybe not everyone will see it as worth the two extra payments.
