I did this trip 13 years ago and booked it again as my husband hadn't been up north. Several trips seemed to amalgamated together and the coach came in the Great Sights livery, but was the tour we had expected. I enjoyed it all those years ago, though this time seemed even better! We bought food/coffee at the various stops and this gave great flexibility. Especially liked the fish and chips which were ready for us to pick up and pay for at Monganui, then eat on the coach during the last leg of the trip.
A long day, but with many stops to break it up, it just sped by, loving every minute of it. The weather was bright and sunny for us, and with rain the night before, this firmed up the massive sand dunes to perfection. It was exciting to just turn off the road in the coach straight into a stream to find sand dunes. Our driver gave a wonderful commentary and at the sand dunes entertained us with his longest ever sandboard ride . . . straight into the stream below! We tried it out on the lower slopes - good fun. Go bare foot, easier to climb and then clean up after.
The time at Cape Reinga was indeed special, a majestic sight of the oceans meeting and beautiful surrounding scenery. Also loved the speedy drive along the beach. Very exhilarating and an awesome day out.

This was a fantastic tour!!
Our driver, Chris, was brilliant. From the morning pick up right through to the end of the day he was full of energy and made a real effort to make everyone feel welcome. (A huge thank you to him!)
In one day we took a ride along the beautiful 90 mile beach, went sand boarding from a 120m high dune, dipped our toes in the waters of the Tasman Sea and later the Pacific Ocean, gazed out from the stunning Cape Reinga and saw some ancient kauri trees. I saw and did things I had never seen before, and learnt lots of information about Maori history from our driver.
I would highly recommend this trip - it's a great way to really experience some of the remote north of New Zealand and the bus journey was really well organised.
Take food to eat with you as there is a picnic opportunity at Tapotupotu Bay, although there is also a stop at a cafe in the morning to allow you to buy food for the day.

In Paihia in NZ the weather wasn't brilliant so we decided to make the best of it with a coach trip. Visited many sites on our way up to Cape Reinga including ancient Kaurie forest, sand boarding down giant dunes and coach drove right along the shore line for 30th. Had free fish & chip lunch, driver great fun with a wealth of knowledge. We are both in our late 60's and really enjoyed the experience. Good trip for young and young at heart.

We left for Cape Reinga on a rainy winter morning. The guide was very informative and for a change to most tours nice to listen to. As the bus makes it way up to the cape you first get to stop for the a forest walk with native Kauri trees. Later on there is a approx. 30 min stop for morning tea (cafe was awfully expensive, so make sure to take along some lunch!) before they take you to the 90 mile beach. At the end of the beach you can go sand surfing which you should definitely do. Even though we got quite wet (some clothes to change are smart to bring along on a rainy day) it was heaps of fun. The walk at Cape Reinga itself might have been beautiful, for the lack of sight I don't really know. Make sure to grab some fishn chips - they are as good as they say

It was a long day but filled with lots of history, visiting loads of sites and finished off by a stop for outstanding fish and chips.
The kauri tree stop was informative and interesting. Ongoing commentary by the guide was fun. Driving on 90 mile beach was incredible. Surfing the sand dunes was exhilirating if not a bit dangerous. Plan to be covered in sand. Bring a towel!! Bring entertainment for the bus ride.
The stop at Cape Reinga was unfortunately rain-filled and uneventful.
Overall a fun way to see and learn about the northern tip of New Zealand.

Wow, that was what we all first stated when we arrived. We had been "told" this place was beautiful, but as you know it's quite another thing to discover that it's true.
DO NOT MISS visiting this beach! We did not go with the tour, as we wanted the flexibility to stay as long as we wanted. Upon arrival we sat down and ate lunch, watching the birds float past, the seagulls crack open small clams and soaked in the atmosphere.
We then enjoyed a long walk along 90 Mile Beaches shores listening to the water lapping upon the sand, the cries of the birds and good company.
(I was spoilt, had my hubby and sensational cousins to share this with)
Tips
* There are no public toilets
* If you want to ride the dunes and see more of the area book a tour
* Take all your water, drinks, snacks and meals with you as there are not too many places you can buy from.
* Ensure your camera has plenty of memory cards or if "old school" loads of film...
* Put aside an entire day to really see everything and enjoy the scenery

Booked the Cape Reinga & 90 Mile Beach tour with awesomeNZ via Intercity. Spent some time at the Puketi Kauri Forest which was nice to start off with. The stop at Cape Reinga was wonderful, it's a place full of cultural significance and the views were abslolutely incredible (the highlight of the tour!). Sandboarding at Te Paki stream was such a thrill and a must-do experience at least once in your life. Had a drive down the 90 Mile Beach - beautiful! Ended off the day with fish & chips for dinner which we had to finish on the bus due to timing reasons, but it was hands down the best I've had in NZ so far. Driver Willie was informative and entertaining (he taught us a Maori song which still pops up in my head sometimes). Overall it was a long, eventful day but I enjoyed every second of it. Would recommend!

Robin our bus driver was full of interesting and fun facts about the area and about the maori language. He also found an appropriate balance between giving us fun facts and relevant information and not talking too much. The sights we took in were brilliant. We were thinking of doing this in our campervan we had rented but are so glad we chose to take the bus as the bus can drive on 90-mile beach and they provided us with boards to go down the sand dunes. Well worth the money!

I took the Cape Reinga trip with Jacki Moore a few months ago. The trip was great but Jacki's narration and sense of humour really made the difference. An unforgettable trip.

Can you recommend a coach company for a day trip to 90 Mile beach from Paihia?
Thank you
Written 7 December 2015
Kia ora Janice, apologies for the delay in responding to your query. We offer two Cape Reinga day tour options - one through Fullers GreatSights which includes a fish and chip lunch, and the other through awesomeNZ where we stop for fish and chips but it is an optional extra. Both depart daily from Paihia and include visits to the Puketi Kauri forest, driving along Ninety Mile Beach, sandboarding at Te Paki Stream and of course Cape Reinga itself.

Hello!
I am planning to visit Bay of Islands with a couple of friends around the 3rd week of november 2015.. But we are planning to self drive from Paihia to Cape Reinga, checking out 90 mile beach on the way.. Any suggestions about this trip?
Also, does it make sense to check into a hostel/hotel aorund cape/90 mile? or should we return to Paihia the same day?
Written 13 October 2015
Kia ora ruheerp,
Thank you for your enquiry. Cape Reinga is definitely a highlight of the Northland region. If you are planning to travel along Ninety Mile Beach during your trip we do not recommend self driving as the beach can be extremely dangerous.
Our Cape Reinga day tours depart daily from Paihia and include a guided tour on a purpose built coach. Along the way you'll experience driving on Ninety Mile Beach, go sand boarding down enormous sand dunes, swim at Tapotupotu Bay, visit a kauri forest and eat delicious NZ fish and chips - and of course see the amazing views at the Cape itself.
This is a return day tour to Paihia. There is very limited accommodation in the Far North region.
All the best for your upcoming visit and don't hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions!
