We were in Uganda and saw a snippet on BBC World News about the amazing escape of Inky the octopus from Napier Aquarium! Our kids have been fascinated with this story of Inky slipping out of his tank and contorting his/her body down through a small drain, out to the freedom of the sea - and as we knew that... More

Great looking building in a top location. Charging for 3yr olds however seems stingy, but hey... Small array of average looking fish. Wonderful sea turtle, but sad that he's been here since 1979. Instutionalisation is sad. Walk through overhead aquarium all a bit empty. Several small sharks, one, maybe two stingrays, but otherwise nothing to get too excited about. The... More

It can be tricky when you have a toddler to find something that will hold her interest and is safe for her to explore. This was both. We had a great time and I think it is well worth the visit if you have kids of any age,

They are renovating so cafe and first level was under construction. The exhibits were interesting and we thought it was well worth investment of admission and time.

Thank you for taking the time to visit. The construction work is now almost complete. The Aquarium and its exhibits are open as usual with no construction hindrance and the Cafe and Gift Shop are also operating More

Regrettably on our visit to Napier, we did not have enough time to visit the aquarium, but our observation, from the outside, was that it was rather too small to be the National Aquarium of New Zealand. Kelly Tarleton’s, of course, is bigger but that is privately owned. However on checking the website we realise that there are many exciting... More

This Aquarium was quaint and informative... and a great way to spend an hour on a rainy day or whilst filling in time. The highlight was definitely the feeding of the fish at 10am with the comedian scuba diver performance. We have seen many Aquariums throughout the world and want to stress this is an ok Aquarium, and needs to... More

Thank you for visiting and providing feedback on your experience. We agree with your recommendation to coincide visits with one of our daily feeding sessions. The penguin keeper talks are at 9.30am, 1.30 & 3.30pm. Reef fish are fed at 10am and sharks at 2pm More

Coming from Hawaii aquariums are hard to impress us. But we loved the earthquake displays, the huge shark mouth and the moving sidewalk through the shark tank. The penguins were cute but I think we missed the show. But we did get to see the kiwi birds and then they had a stuffed one you could take pictures of. Napier... More

Didn't take too long to get thru the aquarium. Boys 12 & 15 enjoyed the shark feeding although it was viewed from the tunnel. Would have been better in the front area where there was more room. Was ok for something different.

Thank you for your feedback. We understand your comments regarding doing the shark feeding in the front window as better from a space perspective. Unfortunately, this is not possible as the front area you mention or Pania reef section, is for reef fish who are kept separate from the larger fish More

We have been by the National Aquarium 100 times and always just said "Whatever, it's just some fish in a tank". Fast forward to a rainy pissy day in Hawkes Bay. We decided to visit the Aquarium. Got there just as the various misfit/rescued penguins were being fed. Beyond awesome. The rest of the displays were wonderful too. We really... More

We took their close encounter with the little penguins. Highly recommended and worth every cent. You do need to book as sessions are limited. The rest of the place gas a solid collection of marine life and is great for kids of all ages.

Awesome to hear that you enjoyed your Close Encounter. Booking in advance is recommended. Sessions are limited over the summer holidays and this is good advice to avoid disappointment. Thank you for your feedback More
