Listen to a 50 minute self-guided audio tour while inspecting the vacant prison cells and deserted exercise yard. You will learn the history of the oldest prison in New Zealand and experience what doing time was all about. Feel the oppressive atmosphere of the hanging garden, the solitary confinement and the death row cells. Hear the tales of the Australasia’s richest drug baron; escape attempts, the Eye eater, hangman’s gallows and much more.

Audio guide tours allow you to take your time and read extra information along the way. Family entertainment is guaranteed with plenty of photo opportunities including mug shots and an opportunity to create life-long memories through our Souvenir Shop

Napier Prison has also been featured on Ghost Hunters International where unexplainable activities were investigated. is also one totally haunted attraction. We invite you to experience your own Ghost Hunt learning from our paranormal experts how to use the ghost equipment, take great photographs and recognize paranormal activity. We provide our guests ample time to use our "Ghost Hunting" devices.

Set into the side of the Napier Hill, up a very steep drive you come to the forbidding front of a large stone wall and entrance to the old prison. You are greeted by a warder in period costume who then takes you through the various parts of the prison, recounting stories of both men and women who were incarcerated... More

Fascinating to walk through the old prison both inside and out. Going through the hanging yard where there is a noose and gallows, escorted in part by Basil the cat. One of the cells we went in had a definite "feel" to it, really interesting to hear the stories and see the graffiti on the cell walls.

This was an interesting place to visit. I think what really freaked me out was that even though the facility is dark and basic, it was in use as a remand facility until 2003. Seems a bit barbaric but there you go. The self-led audio tour is great - it gives you a chance to spend as much/little time on... More

We went as a big group of friends. Some were wondering about the price but my experience is the cost is definitely worth it! It's a mixture of good tucker, theatrical shenanigans and history lesson wrapped up as fun! Just do it!

The presentation is very patchy, haphazard and amateurish overall. There is a laminated sheet displaying key places that are numbered and played on a mobile audio tour. Displays are poorly presented and badly lit. At times, the relevance of displays to the prison itself is questionable eg the 1931 earthquake. A whole room contains information on this topic that is... More

Went to the Art Deco weekend in Napier during the rain and found time to walk up to the Old Napier Prison. Adults $20 but well worth the money. You get a self guided audio tour or join a tour.Spent a couple of hours there self guided.Rock up and ring the bell.We found the staff to be awesome and very... More

Although away from the Town Centre - can be accessed via the beautiful Centennial Gardens - the old Napier Prison proved my favourite local attraction. Unlike some prisons - and this is a relatively small one - there is plenty to see. Your visit (NZ$20 for adults) is greatly enhanced by having an information handset which misses nothing out! A... As a proud Hawkes Bay Grandfather I took my adult children and grandkids to see this historic site. Went years ago when it first opened for tours and it was fantastic. When I went this time I felt embarrassed and most of all ripped off. $20 for each adult is way to expensive and the place is absolutely run down.... More
