so beautiful, surrounded by sea with historic gun placements, tunnels, a working farm, pest free, an education centre & the homestead! It's a trek but easily done! Bring food because there are no shops. Hard to believe the big smoke is just a ferry ride away. Now if DOC just do their bit by clearing the weeds [or allowing others]... More

Great ferry ride across the harbour and walk around the island in the fresh air makes for an enjoyable light adventure.

Visited Motutapu during Easter holidays. My friend and I planned to do trekking but we didn't search much information. We wanted to be flexible on our holiday. :) The treks are quite short and simple compare to its neighbor (Rangitoto) We spent only 3 hrs in total. Then we chilled out on at the camping area. The weather was really... More

Since Motutapu is connected to Rangitoto Island it only seem logical to se both. This is a full day, if not more, adventure. The walking tracks will take you to every part of the Island and offers spectacular views of the interior landscape as well as the ocean. You will be immediately greeted by rolling meadows and working farms. It... More

An easy 2 - 2 1/2 hour walk from Rangitoto Island (you can take the Ferry from Auckland City across to Rangitoto), Motutapu Island is separated by a bridge. It is well worth the walk as the views along the walk are stunning. Best to go over during Late November - Early April when the weather is warmer/nicer.

Little known and seldom visited, Motutapu Island is across the causeway from Rangitoto and closer to the city than Waiheke. Maintained by the Department of Conservation it includes a working farm, beaches, WW2 history. The highlight however is that it is one of Auckland's "Treasure Islands" - a pest free haven for native species. The Motutapu Restoration Trust have planted... More

it was a really long walk for us to reach waikarapupu bay from the home bay, it was the only option to get down from the ferry service providers. but we really enjoyed it. there is some hidden history of world war, in this island. you have to carry food, water and even a rubbish bag as there is no... Like stepping back in time to a place that is becoming again as the islands in the gulf were for previous generations. Exciting to hear and see different birds, in particular saddlebacks.

We visited one weekend during February, using Explore's Sunday service (a fairly new operator in Auckland and slightly better / quicker than Fullers) Having been blessed with amazing weather, we disembarked with several others (along with the volunteers who run the tea-room at the Reid's Homestead). Unlike Waiheke, this island is all about the wildlife and isolation - other than... More

The camping area is at Home Bay. You can book online but even at peak times you would most likely find a spot. Cost is approximately $5 each per night. You can also pay in to an honesty box on the Island, near amenities. We arrived in our own boat but observed the Fullers' ferry from Auckland coming in to... More
