    Free Art Exhibitions
We were walking around Auckland and found this art museum is very central. The best part about it is that it is free and there are activities available as well. I enjoyed the Other Side exhibit as well as the one on masculinity. This is a beautifully designed building. The building is close to Albert Park and the University of Auckland. They also offer free coat check service. A donation is recommended so they can continue to offer this great free space.

    Beautiful and impressive
We had a guided tour of the central part of the collection, excellently illustrating the blending of the European with the local influences. I discovered a few masterpieces that are not well-known outside NZL. To return and to spend more time there. After the tour we had a dinner, excellent in this environment as well.

Good for the price but I wouldn’t go out of my way.
Its free so you need to factor it in. If I had paid I might have felt differently. It was interesting but nit memorable. I skipped the special exhibit but what I did see of the designer was beautiful. That might be worth it. Also if you time your visit there are free tours which might be interesting. Some of the commentary about the pieces, particularly LGBTQ was interesting.

Worth visiting for all art fans
This is a very extensive gallery with plenty to suit most tastes. It is well signposted and laid out so that it didn't feel too crowded or busy. The 3D exhibit in the main concourse didn't work for us, despite several attempts. The café on site is good and was quick to provide snacks and drinks.

Modern to the old works of art
Free to enter accept currently to view work of art gowns by designer Guo Pei that's a charge of $24.50 NZ. Several floors starting on floor 2 the modern art displays, working you're way down to works of art from Picasso, Monet, VanGough & 5 gowns on display as a sample from designer Guo Pei, gold one very beautiful & impressive. Make sure you go to Albert Park up the hill behind Gallery. Highly recommend & isn't huge so can easily get through within an hour. Easy walk from Queen Street & cruise port, also a stop along the hop on/hop off bus route.

    Surprising collection and it’s free
This wonderful art museum is incredibly free. This was my introduction to New Zealand and I found the collection compelling and informative. The galleries were not busy. We also stopped for coffee in the cafe. The balcony view was sweet too. If you are interested in Māori portraits as well as some keen pieces of European art, this is a great place to start.

    Wonderful collection
Very nice variety of some masterpiece art thanks to wealthy donors. The price was right since it was free entry. Signage directing visitors around the museum could be much better.

Excellent exhibition, truly world class and exquisite viewing of the most elaborately embroided garments. Definitely works of art.

The Auckland Art Gallery is unique in that it is free, and on one floor you will see works by the great masters (Monet, Picasso, Cezanne, etc) and on another you will see "modern" works like a hole in the wall where a talking mouse emerges. I thought the museum was well worth spending an hour or so...

Lovely building and free admission. With free admission to an art gallery or museum, sadly, you often get a minimalistic collection. Such seems to be the case here. There is some European art and quite a number of pieces from New Zealand artists, including Maori art and artists. The current paid exhibit is on fashion. While we enjoyed our visit, there is room for improvement.
