His Majesty's Theatre, usually called 'the Maj' is one of the proudest reminders of Western Australia's gold boom at the turn of the 20th century. Since it was puchased by the WA State Government of Sir Charles Court in 1977, it has been restored several times. It is built in Edwardian Baroque style, with a sumptuous interior. The Maj is home base for the WA Opera and is regularly used by the WA Ballet, as well as other performances.

In the 1890s, gold was discovered in Western Australia. The backward colony became rich, and one splendid result was His Majesty.s Theatre. His Majesty's is a glittering remnant of times gone by, with rich furnishings and comfortable seats. These days His Majesty's is used for artistic performances such as opera and ballet.

This theater has been a center of arts and culture in Perth since the reign of sovereigns in Western Australia. His Majesty's Theater is large and well-defined; the furnishings are luxurious and welcoming. It's a great venue for the performing arts, especially ballet and opera. His Majesty's has also featured many popular performances over the years. Locals commend the government of Sir Charles Court, who saved this local artistic treasure from demolition. Access is easy for audiences.

His Majesty's Theatre opened in 1904, when Western Australia was awash with money from the Kalgoorlie Goldfields. It was, in its time, the largest and most most splendid theatre in Australia. The theatre is built in Edwardian Baroque style. His Majesty's was rescued for the people of WA by the Premier, Sir Charles Court.

I love that this theatre still exists in all it's historic splendour. The sightlines might not be as good as modern theatres but the atmosphere, the decorations, the feel of the place is wonderful. I didn't like the show I saw but it didn't matter. It was still a charming night out.

Purchased seats in the middle of row G in the Upper Gallery; these seats were were $30 for the WA Opera and were sold as restricted viewing.
I was very tentative about going to the production, thinking the seats would be awful, but turned out to be such great value! You could see all the action happening on stage, and being positioned centre of the row made it a great experience.
If the person in front of you leans over then there is a slight restriction of view for the very front of the stage (downstage), but only very minimal.
A beautiful venue, with great seats for an even better price.

Love this theatre, it is a beautiful building to go to and a great asset to Perth. I visit at least three times a year to see the ballet and other performances. I prefer to sit in the dress circle as it is getting harder to get a clear view of the stage these days from the stalls. People are tall and sadly block up half the stage The new configuration of seats from row P in the stalls is very problematic as they are not staggered and the view is totally blocked by the person in front, as at the performance of La Sylphide. Considering the price of the tickets I felt very disappointed and lost all enjoyment in the performance. Also last week at the St. Petersburg Ballet a lady had a 5" top knot of hair, not a thoughtful hairdo to go to a performance with, I really wished I had some scissors to chop it off as I lost half the stage. I am becoming less and less enthusiastic to pay a lot of money for a visual performance that cannot be seen in full.

I was in Perth on business and decided to catch a show while I was in town and I’m glad I chose Hus Majesty’s. The theatre is Edwardian Baroque constructed just after the turn of the century (1904) and has a palpable Royal ambience and is now on the State Register of Historical Places. The theatre is located on Hay St right in the CBD unlike the Crown Theatre (Perth’s other major entertainment venue) which is a short ride out of town. Plenty of food options nearby including a restaurant inside the building. The theatre shows a diverse range of work from ballet and opera (its home to the West Australian Ballet & West Australian Opera) to concerts and touring theatre productions ( I saw the National Tour of ‘1984’). Attending a performance at His Majesty’s is an experience you should to your list of things to do in Perth.

Went to see Tosca which was brilliant and a great show by the Western Australia Opera. Had enjoyed this at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and at the Saigon Opera House. Both of the latter before their restorations, however they were heads and shoulders above His Majesty's Theatre in terms of venue.
2 out of 5 toilets in the ladies (including the disabled toilet) were out of order, no paper towels saw a queue that lasted well beyond the 20 minute intermission and was extremely frustrating for my wife.
The temperature in the theatre must have been set for winter as we were extremely warm. We thought it might be just us, but every gentleman had his jacket off and the ladies were fanning themselves.
Shame to be distracted from a really great show, but after paying a premium for 'best tickets' you expect the basics to work.

His Majesty's Theatre is housed in a stunning Edwardian architectural building & is listed as a State heritage icon.
There are numerous shows throughout the year with regular Opera & Ballet concerts. The Barre Lounge cafe located on the street level is an excellent choice for catching up with friends for coffee.

Where is the best lace to sit in the theatre? It would be our first time visiting here and would like to know.. Thank you!

Up the top towards the front in the middle is a great place to sit and a great vantage spot of the stage.

Hi
I would like to know if there are any reasonable seats not up in the Gods to see the WA Ballet. I haven't been to this theatre for many years (I live interstate) but have vague memories of seeing Dame Margot Fonteyn from up in the Gods a very long time ago. We were so high up that any dancers at the back of the stage were cut off at the waist.
Would appreciate any advice.
