Amazing how it's just standing there on the road. Probably not worth an extra trip, but stop if you're passing.

The arch is all that's left of the old barracks when it was demolished to make way for the motorway. The arch was also going to be demolished probably for political reasons as it obstructed the views from parliament on the hill behind. However, a campaign managed to keep it and the brickwork was refurbished using reclaimed hand made bricks... More

The Barracks Arch was supposed to be demolished with the rest of the Barracks, which once held former soldiers. Courageous resistance by several people, including Peter Durack MLA, prevented this wanton vandalism. The reason the politicians didn't like the Barracks was that it spoiled the view from Parliament House down St George's Terrace. This time, progress lost out. The Barracks... More

The arch is at the junction of Malcolm Street and St Georges Terrace in the city. It was once the entrance to the Army Barracks (aka “Pensioner Guards Barracks”) which was built in the mid 1860’s. It almost got knocked down when they built the freeway but great to see they kept a little piece of Perth’s history.

The Barracks are 150 years old. They once held the guards who looked after he convicts.. Like most Perth public buildings from the colonial period, the Barracks are made of brick and were intended to look like a castle In 1961, the State Government attempted to demolish the Barracks but were thwarted by a public outcry led by Peter Durack... Good to have a close up look of this famous landmark. The stories it could tell of what has changed here over the last 100 years! So glad it was kept when so many torn down.

I love Barracks Arch - although it wouldn't be for you if you're not interested in historic buildings. It's a beautiful arch at the western end of St. George's Terrace, and if you want to find out the history of the arch, read the plaque on the northern wall of the arch. Nearby, there is a statue of a gentleman... More

Many people don't realise that this monument Arch was once the opening to the Army Barracks situated on what is now the Freeway. Get close and look for photos - you'll be amazed at how big these barracks once were.

Built as a Barracks for the Pensioner Guards who accompained the convicts of ships from the United Kingdom in the mid 1800's. When the Government of the day was going to demolish it to make way for the freeway, public outcry resulted in just the Arch that is visable today being saved. It stands as a reminder in full view...
