This is such a rare opportunity to find a mob of kangaroos living in the heart of any Australian city. But then there's Perth who has a resident population within the city.

Heirisson Island is their home where the found freely. That doesn't mean you can always find them as they will blend into their environment and hide especially on hot days.

I always see tourists coming here and why not. It's a free bus trip from the CBD to the causeway in East Perth. As Heirissen Island is smack in the middle of the Swan River it isn't hard to find.

Obviously there is still need to be careful as kangaroos can be dangerous especially around their young. They will approach if they want. A zoom on any camera can always get that close photo.

I cannot think of another city which has a wild island within walking distance of the CBD. When we were in primary school, we would ride our bicycles around Heirisson Island, chasing rabbits and other animals. The terrain was bushy, but it was fun. These days, the main wild creatures on Heirisson Island are a mob of kangaroos, which emerge around dusk. Also, there may be snakes; leave them alone and they will leave you alone. This inner-city nature reserve is worth a look, the main hazzard is the traffic on the Causeway.

Just another park surrounded by Swan River. Nice views of City skyline , Optus stadium , Madgarup bridge.
Bird watching, wild life (although not in abundance) can be found. Statue of warrior YAGAN also placed inside park.
Can do picnic around as tables are provided.
Toilets available

Recommended in a sense (if you have nothing to do or wanna do picnic not far away from city with a little bit of different touch from your normal suburb park) you can go their for little enjoyment.

Took the free red CAT bus to "Queens Gardens" (stop #81 or 104, under 10 minutes from Wellington St Perth Station) then walked about 20 minutes across the bridge to Heirisson Island's very cute kangaroos on the right hand side, after entering 2 wire gates. Arrived at around 5:30 pm, an hour before sunset and saw at least 4 very cute kangaroos grazing and hopping about, just steps away! Nice walk along the river with CBD highrises in the background. Just lovely! Recommended if you are in the city but want to see kangaroos up close in nature (previously just saw them from the car driving down to Margaret River)

Very enjoyable walk from Elizabeth Quay along the Swan River. Path to the island is from the causeway bridge that passes over the middle of the island. We walked around the southern part of the island where there were lakes, bird life , some small beaches ,the Yagan statue, views of city high rise buildings through the trees and bushes. We didn’t follow any particular path. There was a fenced off area where we noticed 4 kangaroos resting and grazing.

Less than 3km from the CBD is Heirisson Island, a spacious natural reserve which provided great opportunities to look for kangaroos. Only saw three on my visit (around 9:30-10am), but all were very calm and seemed unbothered by my presence. If you're looking for greater numbers of kangaroos, probably best to visit very early morning or at dusk. Took me about an hour to walk through the entire reserve. There are toilets across the road from the reserve in Charles Paterson Park.

Heirisson Island is nomed after an early French explorer. For many years, Heirisson Island was an abandonned mud flat, but today Heirisson Island is a haven for wildlife. Apart from waterbirds, you are likely to see kangaroos. However, kangaroos are nocturnal creatures, that are active mainly at night. You can walk from the City of Perth to Heirisson Island, there are a number of walking trails on the Island. Although Perth people take Heirisson Island for granted, many visitors think that the idea having wildlife in the centre of the city is quite special.

Walked here over the bridge from the city. The island is in the middle of the Swan River. Access at the time I went was tricky as they were building a new pedestrian/ cycle access path and bridge, just had to follow some diversions. Part of the island is a kangaroo reserve, with double-entry gates. It's free to get in and there are no facilities there like toilets or cafe, just beautiful countryside with small lakes and riverside areas. I saw pelicans there and also three small kangaroos under the trees. Very pleasant walking. A real green oasis close to the city. Highly recommended.

This island lies in the middle of the Swan River. It's on the Causeway which connects Victoria Park and East Perth. The island was named after a crew-member on the Naturaliste, a French ship which explored the area. Heirisson Island has been upgraded in recent years, Its traditional custodians are the Nyoongar people. Although it's walking distance from the city, there are kangaroos and other native animals to be seen, often in the late afternoon.

We reached the island via bus to the WACA and then a 15 minute walk to and over the causeway. No signs at all so we crossed the busy road to the car park thinking this is where it all happens kangaroo wise - Wrong - bit of a dump that side with no seating in the shade.
Cross back over the road and that is where the kangaroos reside, except they were in hiding as it was so hot. The area here is better with paths laid out but very little shade.
Overall a bit disappointing - easier way back to the centre by catching a bus on Adelaide Terrace.
