Swan River
About
Perth's favourite playground, the Swan River is a stunning waterway which winds its way from the Darling Scarp to Fremantle. This natural attraction is popular location for Perth locals and visitors to enjoy a day out boating, fishing, skiing, paddling, swimming, picnicking or simply enjoying its vista.Rich in environmental and cultural values, the Swan River was named Derbal Yerrigan by the local Aboriginals who believe that the river was created by the rainbow serpent ‘Waugal’, a dreamtime spirit taking the form of a giant snake. It is believed that the Waugal created creeks, waterholes, lakes and valleys on its journey to the ocean.

A lovely reflective space to walk in.
The water is peaceful and relaxing and calming and it was lovely to see jellyfish swimming in the river. It was busy in parts with runners and walkers but always relaxing by the water. Take your time to walk the length one way and then back the other then end up with a coffee at the end, a lovely start to the day.

Explore on the Water and Along the Banks
The Swan River is an iconic part of Perth. Whether you are cruising on the river towards Fremantle, commuting across the river or making your way upstream it never failures to disappoint. The river is well used but not overly busy compared to other parts of the world. The waters are clean and it is delightful to be on the water on a warm day.

    Go somewhere on The Swan
I am so in love with the Swan River! Nothing “zens” my soul more! I’ve walked, cycled, kayaked, caught the ferry, just sat and people watched, drank coffee, eaten food more times than I can count. Just a sensational place to be! If you can’t find anything to do on or around the Swan River - well… one could be hard to please 🤭

    An icon of Perth
I enjoyed interacting with the river during my stay in Pert. I took the ferry back from Rottnest Island direct to Perth so travelled up the river. I also did the 2 bridges walk all the way around the water edge. A lovely river.

The hotel I was staying in was a very short walk to the river. I enjoyed just ambling down, walking along the foreshore, watching the boats go by A really nice place to just sit down and unwind for a bit.

The Swan River is the centerpiece of Perth. It is actually two rivers; the Avon River turns into the Swan River. The two main expanses of water are Perth Water and Melville Water. Perth Water reflects the skyscrapers of Perth City. Melville Water is larger, it's alive with sails in summer. The Rottnest ferries give a great view of the River. Try to avoid the later afternoon, when the Fremantle Doctor whips up the waves. If you want to see the City from the River, the Mends Street Ferry is very economical.

The Swan River is amazing and has walking/bike paths all along it. There are safe areas where you can swim and boat ramps for you to launch your boat. Fishing and crabbing are popular. To just sail up and down on the river is great. You can also kyak, cannoe and sail, it is just a great place to spend the day.
