This large park under the West Gate Bridge was developed in the mid-1980's some years after the completion of the West Gate Bridge and those that developed the concept had a grand idea but not sustained or fully realized.Once described as scruffy scenery, dead water , swamps, dead grass and sick factories captured it well as today it can be still described that way. This is a large area with Yarra River access, on the edge of the city but its potential is neglected. Where else could you get such a large area right at the city edge and on the river to develop a magnificent park. It could be great and sadly it is not. The views of the rather ugly West Gate Bridge are excellent and there is a vibrant hum of traffic noise.

We went to the Westgate Park to view the Pink Lake. A bit of a disappointment as the lake was not pink n colour. So, it is just an ordinary park with two lakes. Apparently, the pinkishness comes during very hot weather when the sun's rays reacts with the algae and salt water. Perhaps another time.

Nice inner city park. Entry near the carpark has copious quantities of both dingers and Mentos, looks like evenings get lively.

Can you imagine a place where the water naturally runs pink and not blue or brown? It may be hard to imagine but at Westgate Park in Melbourne, Australia, your imagination becomes a reality; a very pink reality.
A pink lake is a real natural phenomenon and is also a rare sight to see but what turns a lake, which is usually blue, pink? Due to a naturally high salt concentration and recent weather conditions the three lakes in Port Melbourne's Westgate Park have turned a shade of lipstick pink. The natural phenomenon only occurs in saltwater lakes in a handful of countries around the world. There are also some pink lakes in the Murray-Sunset National Park in north-west Victoria and Lake Hillier in Western Australia. This occurs at Westgate Park in Melbourne during the summer season and returns back to its normal blue in Autumn. Westgate Park is lovely to visit at any time of year but during summer/early autumn it is especially special to see the pink water!
This is a must see! it is absolutely beautiful! Anyone can visit from singles, couples, friends and families. It is not recommended to swim in the lake, more to admire but it is not harmful to swim in it.
I have also written a blog on the visit and it includes photos! Take a peek at http://misskaylie.blogspot.com.au/2014/04/a-place-where-water-runs-pink-westgate.html.

The Pink lake locates only 30min form CBD. During our visiting, we were totally suprised by the appearance of the lake, and the richness of flora and fauna groups in the area. It is a perfect place for a 1-2 hour escape; lovely for photo shooting as well.
Here are some suggestions basing on our Westgate Park-tour-experience:
1. The lake only 'pink' at certain period during summer, it is better to check the park's website to make sure it has turned pink before visiting: http://parkweb.vic.gov.au/explore/parks/westgate-park
2. There are more than 1 lake in the park, and not all of them will turn pink, so please make sure you walked all the way till you find the one.
3. If you take public transport (Southerncorss station --> bus 235), please get off at the intersection of Todd road and Wharf road, then walk along Todd road. The park view is blocked by the huge Heraland & Weekly building, so the entrance might not be very easy to recognise.
4. BBQ area is available; considering the nature odour of the salty lake, and the very basic toilet facility of Westgate Park, I would not recommend having BBQ party in the park.
Hope this is helpful, and wish you a delightful visit.

It's a nice small park under the bridge in Melbourne waterfront. However the water in the park is no longer pink. According to the notice at the park, the "pink" will be returned during next summer.

The lake is pink only when weather is very hot. You can park your car right in front of the lake ( enter through Todd Road ), it is very pleasant indeed. The best thing is you don't have to travel very far ( 30 min by bus from Southern Cross Railway station), driving from city, it is easier to use State route 55, select the far right lane (with right turn pocket) the sign saying heading towards Fishermans Bend, then Lorimer Street and Todd Street.

Arrived after reading reviews, thinking we'll go anyway and see if it's pink on the off chance.
There is a sign that states it's no longer pink at all, so don't listen to people who say it is.

The lake has returned to its pink colour in the past week or so.
Definitely worth taking a trip here if you have never seen a pink lake.

Nice park that truly radiates a pink lake. Carpark is quite busy. Is a well known meet up place place for men and funny business. Be wary of reciprocating the friendly smile. Unless thats your thing it should be fun. The lake it self is pink and its the 20th of may Other posters have said only come in summer but dont be put off by coming in early late autumn.

Aún está el lago de color rosa?
Hay que pagar la entrada al parque o es libre?

Do you know if the lake still pink this week? Hope to visit tomorrow (12th)

It is also accessible by public bus using a myki card. See the PTV website and use its journey planner or bring up Google maps as it has all bus stops shown. The 606 bus (from Elsternwick railway station and Barkly Street, St Kilda is one route that not many know about: on weekdays it terminates right by the lake, as does another route from Melbourne's CBD.

Hi everyone,
Do you think a visit can be made to Westgate Park on a brief stopover in Melbourne ? Say for about 7 hours to spare. Is it worth going in this short time?
Written 6 April 2019
I agree, with the recent rain it’s no longer pink
Written 6 April 2019
Is the lake currently pink does anyone know or is it likely to be in December? Thanks
Written 15 November 2018
Pink disappeared after June 2018 that the park has no idea if it would come back.
