Lygon St is always busy - the central attraction these days is Brunetti's - a honey pot classic Italian Coffee Bar that is the size of a medium department store. My favourite place in this Carlton strip of Lygon St is the Nova Arthouse Cinema, Yet (the further North you go on Lygon St, the more interesting it becomes. Coffee,... More

Went out for dinner at Stone Mill (Italian) on Friday night. Busy but relaxed, owner and staff very friendly, food good, wine list features some good Italian wines and some Australian wines.

There are still some good restaurants in Lygon but there are also some bad ones to beware! By all means go for a walk and experience the sprukers trying to coerce you into their restaurants.

Lygon Street in Melbourne, has, for years been the place to go for 'delitzioso' Italian cuisine. Just walking along enjoying the amalgum of a hundred different fragrances is .......in many cases....just too tempting to resist......... for me Lygon Street is Una casa lontano da casa........a home away from home.........

Great place to dine Italian style, it is a good idea to take the long walk and check out the restaurants before you choose one, all the restaurants are run by Italians and their children, their large variety of pastas are delicious, pizzas are out of this world but you can also purchase main meals done the Italian way. Enjoy... More

We watched the film made about the history of Lygon Street and went to see it for ourselves. Ended up in the University Cafe for dinner. A great experience.

If you are in the are and need food then head for Lygon street. It is wall to wall with eateries covering just about any type of cuisine you could want. Seemed good prices as well.

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
