Melbourne Central is a diverse shopping and dining destination that invites you to keep exploring.

Bringing together more than 300 retailers over five levels, Melbourne Central is home to an absorbing range of Australian and international fashion brands from Gorman, Alannah Hill, Crumpler to Vans and Nique. Take a sugar break at Cupcake Central, a beauty break at Mecca Maxima or an indulgent time-out at Self Centred Medi Spa.

The buzz continues after dark, whether you are lurking in Knox Lane with its graffiti by Melbourne's infamous DABS and MYLA, or basking beneath a screen in the Hoyts Lux Cinema. Spanning two city blocks, the centre boasts several unique architectural features including the giant Marionette Watch hanging in Shot Tower Square, famous for its hourly rendition of the Australian anthem 'Waltzing Matilda'. The square is named after the historic Coops Shot Tower a bullet-making facility built in 1889. Today, the brick shot tower stands proudly in its original place, protected by a modern twist: the magnificent Glass Cone, designed in the '80s by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa. While it floods the centre with natural light, the Glass Cone's design also makes it one of Melbourne's most recognisable landmarks.

Located atop the City Loop Melbourne Central train station and can be found on the iconic free city circle tram route. Melbourne Central boasts 822 car parks making it the perfect base for Melbourne city excursions. The five-star-rated parents' retreat offers a sanctuary for families, while The Little Library free book exchange provide spaces for pause and escape from the city's frenetic buzz. Whatever brings you to Melbourne, be it shopping, exploring, lunch, brunch or simply an unexpected adventure, it is all waiting between Lonsdale and La Trobe.

Or to go behind the scenes book a place on Melbourne Central's Unlocked Tour which leads visitors around hidden nooks, rarely-seen vantage points and secret rooftops.

Bernadette Alibrando can also tell you the tales of Melbourne Central's huge range of artworks in the Walk to Art Tours.

This modern shopping mall offers a scene of historical architecture within its complex. Visitors will enjoy both the modern shopping experience and a presence of historical revisiting at the same time.

It is overwhelming! When you look up you do as my son did "wowwwww!!!" And then you get pictures and try to be artistic about it and you are still in maze. Then you look down (your neck is already hurting from looking up) and it's just an ordinary shopping centre with nothing much to see actually! Melbourne has more... More

There are so many shops and great looking places here. When you finally get to the top and look into the middle you see this wonderfully kept piece of history--Coops Shot Tower. You will not be disappointed if you visit this place.

Apart from the joy of free wifi there is also a lead shot tower still insitu which has had a roof built over it and has a small museum in it. There is also an amazing clock opposite the shot tower that plays waltzing matilda every hour. Lovely place to go

Although this centre has many shops and a supermarket, as well as the metro rail, it is a grim sort of place full of dark and violently coloured spaces, with chaotic crowds in busy times and feeling poorly lit and inhospitable in slower times.

It's easy to get lost inside Melbourne Central with its many levels and snaking corridors. It is a very new and fresh shopping centre in the heart of the CBD as its name suggests and has literally everything you need from food to fashion and is easily accessible by train and tram.

This shopping centre has everything. High end shopping to budget bargain shopping. All the usual shops plus lots of other unique boutiques. The food courts are very good & kept clean. The toilet facilities were very clean

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
