Neighbourhood: Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

    Well Done Mitre Tavern
Down a busy little laneway is a great jewel called Mitre Tavern. Good points ; STAFF, STAFF and again staff. It is what makes this such an amazing place. They are down to earth, genuine people, that always have a smile when they look you in the eye. The food is extremely tasty. Its pub food heaven. The atmosphere is great. Always busy, always full of business people in suits mixing it with tradies in shorts and boots. a Great mix and well worth the effort

    Hidden Laneway Gem
According to the barman, the Mitre is one of the oldest, if not oldest, building in Melbourne and dates back to the mid 1800's. What you get is a really old & cosy English style pub with lots of nooks & crannies. Plus over 40 different beers on tap! I've been coming to Melbourne since 1974 and had never seen or heard of it before? So very glad we stumbled on it for a Sunday afternoon drink with dinner to follow. Had a great time from watching the Supercars, watching the passing parade and a lot of laughs in between. Huge beer garden for the crowds plus heaters for Melbourne's fickle weather! Most of the meals looked good & fair value, but I had a fail with the Portuguese Chicken unfortunately! Maybe the Steakhouse next time?

    Pint in the laneway
Celebrating quietly EOY with a cheeky pint. Mitre’s unique vibe added to my book closing happiness .. holiday entering. Hazy IPA the choice in a fine tap selection of new crafts & ancient ales. Enjoyed the pint standing at outside barrel to watch world go by.

    Iconic Melbourne laneway pub
Another laneway pub in Melbourne CBD. Despite being a little hidden it’s very well known and definitely worth the effort. From a standing beer in the cobblestone laneway outside, a drink and feed inside the cozy wood panelled bar or an amazing steak in the steak restaurant upstairs this Melbourne icon is a gem. Two of us popped in for a steak at short notice and the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating. Now the steaks, a400 gm porterhouse and a 350gm eyes fillet just melted in the mouth with some blue cheese sauce and delicious potatoes topping them off. Wonderful overall experience.

We went on a Saturday about 7pm and were able to get a table in the bar. We had a couple of beers, spring rolls, and quinoa salad. The staff was super friendly and offered us plates for sharing. This place is a bit hidden, down a narrow alleyway that widens into a fun bar scene. The building is really old and unique. The bar area is surprisingly well lit, making it easy to read the menu and people watch.

Big disappointment. At 4.30pm we found ?100 male office workers drinking outside, inside was busy enough to.
We wanted to eat but the bar food kitchen would not open till 5.
Lots of brand new young staff doing little, and no one would even take our order before 5.
The back room we were in (plenty of these) was dingy dull.
We had a drink and moved on.
For such an historic building it is very disappointing.

Looking for a great steakhouse online, we stumbled across the Mitre Tavern.
Tucked away on Bank Place, the external and internal of the establishment was full of history.
We were seated straight away and received sparkling water and warm bread with butter, off the bat.
We ordered:
- Seared Scallops
- Kransky Sausage
- Scotch Fillet
- Scotch & Shells
- Onion Rings

Everything tasted AMAZING. My steak was cooked perfectly. Hubby asked for well done, it was a little pink inside for him but he enjoyed it.

Wait staff were great and very attentive.

Will definitely be back!

Love visiting the Mitre. Have been coming here off and on for nearly 40 years. Whether just for drinks, or enjoying their pub lunch, never disappointed. Have beers for all tastes, a top choice of wines. Indoor and outdoor spaces. Friendly efficient staff.
