Readings Bookshop has reopened after being totally renovated, everything from the floor coverings to the air conditioning has been renewed. The counter has been lengthened, to allow speedier service for customers. Most of the books are in approximately the same position as before, but the...More
I’m always in heaven when I go into a Readings store and no more so in Carlton. Surrounded by great places to eat and the splendid atmosphere of Lygon Street, entering Readings is a hypnotic experience.

Going to Readings is like entering another world. Based on a good formula of presenting a breadth of genres with colour and stylish displays with fabulous little books with chairs where you can sit and divulge your reading options.
The staff are always lovely and...More
So much to choose from, so little time! We were given a set time to take a look at the shop and meet back for the next part of our trip and it wasn't anywhere near enough to fully enjoy what Readings has to offer....More
Not the fault of Readings, but books are high here. The store is nice, and the staff are quite willing to answer questions. The one thing I didn't like was that the history section had WW1 stuff all mixed in with rest of history, so...More

If you are a book lover this store is a must do
Bookshop and children's books next door with such a great selection in each
Happily purchased two books could have easily bought more if it weren't for luggage restrictions
After a sumptuous meal at one of Lygon Street's many Italian restaurants, head to Readings. My husband and I spent a delightful evening perusing the wide selection of books, DVDs and CDs. The staff were knowledgeable and helpful.
I'm an author. I'm a reader. I'm a lover of all things to do with books and Readings has always been my 'go-to' place when it comes to books. If they would let me, I'd bring my sleeping bag and stay the night.
If you want real parmesan, cut from the block, grated over your pasta with a twist of style, this is the place. Until recently, this neighbourhood was home to the notorious ‘Carlton Crew,’ a pseudo mafia who started their day with a local espresso. They are gone, but the espresso still runs strong in this Little Italy which has something for everyone. Starched white tablecloths, candles, pizza the way
they do it "back home" and maybe even a bit of amore. The number of gelato choices will leave you in a state of indecision and wide footpaths, big awnings and a sea of packed tables makes this al fresco dining experience a continental buzz. Even if you’re not eating, it’s worth the stroll just for the people-watching, which, of course, is an Italian tradition.
