Cinema Nova was established in August 1992 as a collaboration between two landmark Australian independent cinemas - the Longford Cinema in South Yarra and the Valhalla Cinema in Richmond and Westgarth, and opened as a twin theatre. Since that time we've grown to become one of the biggest independent cinemas in the world, with 16 theatres showing the best in quality indie, Australian and arthouse film. An essential part of the Lygon Street scene, Cinema Nova is a part of Carlton's cultural fabric and offers Melbourne more than any other cinema. With our exclusive seasons we've brought Melbournians their only chance to see on the big screen films such as Ex Machina, Snowpiercer, Mud, The Witch, Cabin in the Woods, Margaret, Weekend, Citizenfour, Winter Sleep, Under the Skin, The Bling Ring, I Am Eleven, and of course Lygon Street: Si Parlo Italiano. Cinema Nova was among the first cinemas in the country to start screening stage productions from around the world, and we now draw thousands to see the Met Opera and London's National Theatre from the comfort of our theatres. Our Meet the Filmmaker and curated events programs allow our audience to experience film up close and personally, while also making going to the cinema an exciting event. From our famous house-made choc tops, voted the best in Melbourne by The Age, to our Nova Bar + Kitchen, and our indulgent Nova Deluxe and High Tea in-cinema dining sessions, you can combine your love of cinema with the best in food and beverages.

If you looking for a great cinema to visit in Melbourne go to Cinema Nova! You can expect to see the best quality Australian, arthouse, and indie films here. Often they have exclusive seasons that bring you films you can’t see anywhere else in Australia. There also are regular Q&A sessions with filmmakers and V.I.P’s to look forward to. All... More

My overall rating is 'Excellent', because over the years I've come to view its quirks and problems (poor lighting in the Ladies toilets for example) as endearing rather than annoying. Plus there's a little bistro/coffee area up there far better than the pretentious and disappointing Brunetti's downstairs. The choice of films is interesting and varied (I was moved to tears... When we stay in Melbourne, we love to go to the movies. Nova is our favourite because it is located in Carlton, the italian area of Melbourne. Good food and drinks in this area !

Although Nova used to be on of the great independent cinemas of melbourne, sadly they have fallen into the cliche world of the popular movie. In fact every cinema in melbourne is currently showing the same offerings (maybe excluding Astor and ACMI). What happened to the foreign language selection in this supposedly multicultural city? Really this is the sad reality,... More

Located in Lygon Street, the theatre is well within reach of the city. Take a tram to the end of the free travel section & then walk a few blocks. Coffee/ cake shop , tickets on the ground level. Machine for CC but make sure you collect a ticket per person as they print. Good selection of movies. Many places to... More

Here is what I don't get. Why do you have to pay a surcharge when buying tickets online? Why can't you buy tickets at the box office with your credit card when you can purchase food and drinks with them. And if you want to push people to use your ticket kiosks make sure they are working! Apart from those... More

We saw a film in a small cinema - 7 - and it was very small and not much room. There is only one aisle, so once you're in, you're stuck there - no chance to move if a talker sits next to you. Cinema needs updating and please close the door as the movie starts, rather than 10 minutes... More

Staying in Lygon Street

Neighbourhood Profile
Lygon Street
If you want real parmesan, cut from the block, grated over your pasta with a twist of style, this is the place. Until recently, this neighbourhood was home to the notorious ‘Carlton Crew,’ a pseudo mafia who started their day with a local espresso. They are gone, but the espresso still runs strong in this Little Italy which has something for everyone. Starched white tablecloths, candles, pizza the way they do it "back home" and maybe even a bit of amore. The number of gelato choices will leave you in a state of indecision and wide footpaths, big awnings and a sea of packed tables makes this al fresco dining experience a continental buzz. Even if you’re not eating, it’s worth the stroll just for the people-watching, which, of course, is an Italian tradition.
