I toured the MCG but didn’t visit the museum. Lack of time. The tour is interesting. You step onto the oval, you go to the change rooms & medical treatment area & then up to level 4 with interesting stops along the way. There are surprisingly great views of Melbourne & the sporting precinct. My only criticism is it is a bit rushed. You want to listen to your guide as he has interesting facts but then there is no time to take photos as you have to get to the next spot & be finished in 75 minutes. Allowing 90 minutes would give more time for photos. Go as early as possible as later tours usually appear to have bigger groups. Well worth a visit

We started with a coffee then onto the MCG tour. 90 minutes of behind the scenes stories, anecdotes & pure history. Our guide, John, like all guides is a volunteer member of the Melbourne Cricket Club. He was very knowledgeable and witty.
Our day was 34 degrees so guides were excused from jackets, only wearing ties.
Then a free ice cream for the kids and down into the (air conditioned) museum. It is a great collecting of memorabilia, film, photos and sound.
There’s lots of fun interactive stuff for the kids of all ages.
Volunteer guides know their stuff and have stories you’d never hear anywhere else.
We spent 3 hours on both but could easily have spent hours more.
The museum is very accessible for any mobility level with lifts, ramps etc .
The MCG tour is suitable for likitwd endurance etc with gentle slopes, elevators and escalators. There are some gentle stairs, but I’m sure they are avoidable.

The Australian Sports Museum demonstrates the love Australians have for sport, and the success the nation has had in international competitions, including the Olympic Games. Some sports, such as Australian Football and Rugby League, will appeal mainly to Australians, but some sports in which Australia has traditionall been strong, such as swimming, tennis and cricket have a wide appeal. The Australian Sports Museum will appeal to international and local visitors alike. Many displays are interactive.

Went here on a Sunday and was impressed on how they have now made it interactive and enjoyable. I loved reliving Australian sporting history and seeing pictures, artifacts, information about legends of the past. A great few hours spent strolling around.

The NSM is one of my favorite places to visit. You don't have to be a sports fan to appreciate this Museum. Olimpic memorabilia area is fabulous. Cricket trophies are gorgeous and the 3D experiance is worth a visit on it's own. Football area has fun interactive activities for all ages too!

Get a dual ticket with the MCG tour - many interesting stories and exhibits from Australian and international sports. Some good interactive exhibits as well.

In the good ol'US of A, many Americans- including me- are passionate about our sports. We are so passionate that we have the luxury of enjoying many types of sports such as American football, basketball, or hockey. When I came to this museum, I learned that many Australians are very passionate about their favorite sports such as rugby, cricket, and Australian football (an awesome sport to learn by the way). I got an opportunity to dive into the history of Australian sports.
Australians REALLY Love Their Sports
I knew many of the common sports that Australians played. I watched or played them at some point of my life- rugby, cricket. What I learned from coming this museum is that Australians are very passionate about their sports just like Americans are. It's no wonder that Australians are very competitive against us Americans when it comes to swimming! When you come in this museum, you gain a sense of how proud Australians are. If you are not familiar with the common sports Australians play, I'll tell you. There are rugby, cricket, and Australian football are the most common sports Australians play. They aren't the only sports that the country play- basketball, swimming, soccer, and other sports. Even so, the three I mentioned before are the ones that anyone outside of Australians would likely recognize as Australian.
You Are Gold with Australian Olympics!!!!!
If you want to learn about this history of the Olympics, this is the place to do it. Australia very proud to have hosted many Olympic games. They are so proud that the museum even keep the Olympic torches. Eveything is put in fine detail. You can learn about Australian's Olympic history (they have A LOT of gold, silver, and bronze medalists)!
Cricket Grounds
The museum is part of the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Grounds). If you didn't know, a cricket field is the largest field to play in any sports. Australian football league plays on this field, which if you didn't know, is a challenge to play defense with so much space. The field is in impeccable conditions!
Overall, a wonderful museum in Melbourne. I learned a lot in how to play many of the Australian sports. Also, I learned much about the Olympic history. The best part is that I saw a cricket field in person and found an Australian football team who I support ( Melbourne Demons- Go Demons)!

I cannot rate this experience highly enough. The NSM is located at the MCG and its worth buying a combined MCG tour (which I've reviewed elsewhere) & museum ticket (combined $30 per adult - museum only $20). The museum is open every day between 10am and 3pm but make sure you leave plenty of time to explore - I spent a good three hours there but still didn't spend enough time there. Entry comes with a free audio guide, which is really handy. There are large displays for AFL supporters, including the AFL hall of fame, a holographic commentary by James Hird and interactive sporting challenges. For cricket enthusiasts the history of Australian cricket is well laid out, with a holographic commentary by Shane Warne. Then there is extensive galleries on Australia's involvement in the Olympic Games over the decades. There are also rooms and displays set aside for racing and other sports (cycling, rugby, basketball, boxing) each of them containing unique and fascinating items of memorabilia. If you like sport or history or both then you shouldn't miss visiting the National Sports Museum in Melbourne.
