I was given the wrong change on both occasions I visited this market. They knew what they were doing ,as when I pointed out the mistake , on both occasions were able to immediately to give me the exact amount missing. View this place as dodgy since then - never went back.

The Nutcrackers: Cheating on few occasions.
I go to Footscray Market every Saturday morning for the last 10 years. This morning 26/11/2022 I buy 3 bags of coffee, 250grs each. That type of coffee is $40 dollars a kg. I give the owner $50 note and he gives me $10 change. I say he should give me $20 change and he says he put a little bit more coffee in so he charges more.
I don't want to make a scene and I remember it's is not the first time he does it to me. Before today he charged me $2 more without saying anything. I promise to myself never buying from his shop again.
I just feel that shop owner like him makes people think badly about Footscray Market.

Footscray Market is famous for its fresh food. There's a variety of foods, ranging from lechon (Filipino roast pork) to pho (Vietnamese noodles.) The food court is a bargain. Customers come from miles around for the fresh fruit and vegetables. The stall holders are always ready to promote. their products, especially Asian specialties.

Buy poultry from the highly visible, larger traders here, the smaller ones away from the mainstream traffic are unscrupulous. Asked for 2kg and chicken wings (not much I know, but still it’s a purchase) and the girl behind the counter tried to charge me $2.00 more per kg than what her father had told her. After she “realised” her mistake all was forgiven and correct price was charged I thanked her and smiles resumed all round. Just returned home to find that she had substituted half a kg of my order with a chicken frame which costs nothing but contributes to the overall weight, so have been ripped off as her initial intention had been. Check what you ordered BEFORE walking away or keep a keen eye on everything they put in the bags for you to save yourself some frustration and disappointment at home. I will still shop at the market but am wise to the scams that can occur with some traders and will be more vigilant in the future.

There was a time with this relatively stinky and unpleasant market was worth the trip. It was so filled with bargains that it made to general grubbiness and hassle worth it. Those days appear to have passed. My last few trips have been a real disappointment. I’m wondering if this maybe relates to the loss of the Little Saigon market-there is no longer any real competition. The final straw for me was the purchase of a 1.5 kilo “free range” chicken from the chicken shop nearest the train station (right by the fruit market). I was hesitant because it seemed expensive for the size but the shopkeeper assures me they were absolutely excellent for roasting. When I got it out of the bag at home I realized I had paid $20 for a skinny (to the point of starvation) chicken with its head and feet still attached. It was tough, stringy, and without question the worst chicken I’ve ever eaten in my entire life. Anyway, I don’t anticipate going back anytime soon. No longer worth the hassle.

Stopped at the Footscray Market because we were in the area. This is a fully working food market for locals wanting to purchase meat, fish, fruit and vegetables. This market also had a number of Asian grocery outlets and a couple of European style delicatessens selling cold cuts, cheese and nuts. There is also a "food court" type area. Whilst we purchased some fruit and vegetables and a few grocery items for reasonable prices, we didn't purchase any meat as we were too far from home to keep it cool during transit without an esky. We didn't find the "food court" very appetizing and decided to have lunch elsewhere.
Overall the market section was good but the "food court" could do with a clean up and some better offerings.

We were most impressed when we visited - the first time in many years. Everywhere was spotlessly clean, the prices were good, the stall-holders friendly & the multi-level parking was convenient & cheap.

This is an excellent local market a mere 15 minutes from my home in Footscray a predominantly Vietnamese area.
There are larger and better markets but this is still a very good market.
Mostly Vietnamese businesses and one can get great choices in fruit, vegetables and meat. Towards the end of the day meat etc gets marked down.

Although the Market is closed on Sundays and Mondays, the cafes, restaurants, and greengrocers that surround it remain open, as does the car park on its roof. I got some good produce here.

My partner and I went to the market on Tuesdays afternoon about 2:30pm. Some of the retailers selling meats/poultry/fish were packing away some goods. Best to go before lunch. They might put Price down towards end of day. Huge selection of produce, less grocerers than other produce and the odd Nic nac stores.

can you purchase certified organic vegetables and meat from footscray market?
Written 26 June 2018
Unfortunately I’m not sure. The market has so much going on at once and so many people to move about I did not specifically notice organic produce but I’m sure there would be a market management contact number you could contact to confirm.
