Have visited the Mt Nelson Lookout twice in recent months; with the first time unfortunately ruined by thick fog and mist! Despite it being a clear day where we lived, it clearly wasn’t at Mt Nelson – if in doubt, check weather forecasts and weather systems before going! The second time I was able to truly appreciate the spectacular scenery... More

A lovely, quiet grassy slope to wile away the afternoon looking at views of the Derwent. There's a cafe for lunch too and an interesting historical observatory.

Rode to the top from Sunday Bay Rd via Nelson Street. 4.25 miles, but the grade is not too bad. Very light traffic and the views from the top are worth the effort

Once you manage the long, winding road, it is so worth the drive. We could see right across the channel and Hobart. It would be good to have a restaurant or cafe for people to enjoy the view.

If you don't like it cold and want a nice view of Hobart and surrounds then this is the place. Not quite the views of Mt Wellington but the views down the river are amazing on a clear day. Short drive from Hobart.

We visited this lookout as I'd read reviews of it and thought it would be a nice counterpoint to Mt Wellington (which we also visited). Our large family group (all adults) loved this lookout and the gorgeous cafe/restaurant there. Hobart was shrouded in mist and completely invisible when we arrived .... then the mist lifted and we were treated to... More

If it's too cold for Mt Wellington head straight to Mount Nelson Lookout. The views are breathtaking and if you need lunch, or just a coffee the Signal Sation cafe / restaurant is just the place.

Whatever the weather the splendid Signal Station Brasserie will tempt you to linger longer as you enjoy the expansive views of the city, harbour, Storm Bay, south to Bruny Island, north and east. My Nelson is only 10 minutes from the city up the Southern Outlet. Return via "the bends" through the suburb of Mt Nelson. Soak up the views... More
