The Theatre Royal opened in 1837, with major additions in 1850 and 1890, and remains a living centre for the performing arts. It presents live theatre, contemporary music, dance and entertainment. Dubbed by Noel Coward "a dream of a theatre", the Theatre Royal is Australia's oldest working theatre and one of its most beautiful treasures.

The nose bleeds are tight and uncomfortable....much better experience downstairs. I have been several times over the years but this was my first foray in the upper tier. Went to see Toni Childs who was perhaps more disappointing than the seats.

The Theatre Royal is decorated in its original over the top 19th century Victorian colors - definitely WOW! An intimate venue for plays just make sure you don't book a seat behind a column.

I recently was in Hobart for Dark Mofo. The Theatre Royal had a production of Dracula on which was very good. Lovely theatre in Hobart and was centrally located from my hotel. Would go and see another production in there again.
