A very interesting site, and although little remains of the internal walls of the buildings, innovative markers and pictures allow you to understand the structure. We enjoyed our guided tour and thought the guide was very knowledgeable. However "Her Story" really brought the Female Factory to life, it was very realistic and well presented. Hard to believe that this was... More

Sometimes, and it grieves me to say it, an historic site has been lost. This large site was not saved in time, and the connection, that intangible thread that draws us into a time long gone, is not strong enough to make the site interesting. I feel that's the situation here. Unless some serious archeology is found, I fear it... More

This is the main female convict prison in Tasmania. It was one of five and by far the largest. Its a semi ruin site these days but staffed with excellent tour guides and an acted sequence about the life of a real female convict who passed thru here in the 1800's. Cost for site admission, a tour, and the 1... More

Having visited port Arthur, The Coal Mines, The Woolmer Estate, we decided to visit one more of the Convict Stations. Only 3 of the original 5 yards remain, that were used to house female convicts and their children. In this small space was a nursery, school for children, hospital, work area and sleeping quarters for the female convicts. There is... More

Fantastic place to get a real feel of how harsh the colonial days of Australia really were particularly for women. I really recommend doing the tour here as it gives you a real in depth view of the place that you won't get otherwise

This is a must see after Port Arthur. This historical site has been superbly designed despite the lack of actual buildings. The guided tour is a must, do not do it on your own. So glad we went there.

We arrived early in the morning and were lucky to have Anna as our guide. She gave us a very credible version of life as a female convict arriving in Hobart. The Factory site is well outlined and detailed. We came away with insights as to what a hard life these woman had in this institution.

This is a worthwhile stop and at only $5 each for basic admission you cant really complain about the price. Having seen this after Port Arthur, there is considerably less to look at, as a lot of it was pulled down and re-purposed since it closed. They have done an excellent job though of working with what is left to... More

The history of women in the settlement of Australia has been disgracefully neglected and this is a welcome addition to rectifying this. The appalling treatment of women convicts is beautifully told through actors in Her Story. Conveniently located near the historic Cascade Brewery the two form a must visit attraction for visitors to Hobart.
