- Josee SGrand Cayman32 contributionsWell worth it on a clear dayWe drove up moments before sunrise. It was freezing but well worth the trip. Going early allowed us to have the rest of the day to visit the Salamanca Market and get breakfast at the Harbour Lights restaurant, then visit MONA, all in the same day.Visited December 2022Written 14 December 2022
- travelnomadNZCambridge, New Zealand3,616 contributionsGreat day awesome driverHighly recommend doing this trip to see Hobart from Kunyani Mt Wellington. Our driver Tim was excellent and very knowledgable. Recommend you do this trip in good weather before you do an Iron Pot Cruise. My brother and I enjoyed it. Hint: warm jacket, good footwear, camera and sunscreen. Lots of good walks available from topVisited January 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 1 January 2023
- Chris WPerth, Australia17 contributionsDramatic change in the weather over a couple of daysMt Wellington! We had to do it as first time visitors to Tasmania! Though it was a fairly hairy drive to the summit. Me being used to roads that stretch for kilometres in straight lines with few sharp bends on a flat landscape compared to narrow twisty turning foggy roads with hairpin bends a thousand foot drop on one side and a cliff on the other. Well maybe I'm exaggerating a bit there, about the roads I normally drive on that is ;). Anyway our first visit yielded a view of a few hundred meters max through fog and drizzling rain, see the attached photo. We re-visited a couple of days later and it was warm the panorama was spectacular and we could see Hobart and surrounds, so I took a photo from the same spot as a comparison. It was well worth the visit on both occasions but the second visit had better views.Visited October 2022Written 8 January 2023
- Jennifer BAdelaide, Australia43 contributionsWindiest place on earth. This is my second trip up this beautiful mountain. We had all seasons weather within an hour, sunshine, rain, hail and wind and more wind. it was so windy but so much fun. The views are fantastic with some great viewing platforms. Well worth a drive upVisited January 2023Written 9 January 2023
- FyingKiwiChristchurch, New Zealand940 contributionsGreat ViewQuite a journey to get to the top of the mountain, often having to contend with oppositional traffic on a steep narrow road. From the top of course you have a splendid view of Hobart. However, equally splendid views of the same nature and of a much-reduced distance could possibly be considered more attractive. However, Kunanyi/Mount Wellington is touted as a must do when in Hobart, so undoubtedly remains a mountainous draw card. There are a number of walking tracks that can be done through Wellington Park also, which may add to the pleasure of the journey.Visited January 2023Written 9 January 2023
- Naomi GTownsville, Australia14 contributionsXmas Day ViewingWe decided to go and take a look on Xmas Day, with everyone else! It was very busy and took over 20 mins with bumper-to-bumper traffic for the last part. Once you were there, the views are spectacular. Make sure you take a jacket, the wind and coolness was incredible. Make sure you use apple maps not google maps. Google maps took us the very long way but it was nice to see the countryside.Visited December 2022Written 11 January 2023
- karengouldDorset, United Kingdom14 contributionsDon’t miss out on the penitentiary it’s fabulousOn arrival at the Penitentiary we were met by a lovely lady who was very happy and friendly. She immediately started to part with her knowledge of this place while we waited for our tour. Then met with Mark out tour guide, I think we hit gold. This man was a walking encyclopaedia and again filled our minds with a wealth of his knowledge too. Just incredible This trip wasn’t advertised to us on out boat, but I think everyone should go there if you want to learn about history, so many stories, sadness and a few success stories. If you think our world is tough now, you wouldn’t have wanted to be in the 1800 s arriving in Tasmania. A huge eye opener Go and visit,Visited January 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 14 January 2023
- Anneliese WWellington, New Zealand5 contributionsAmazing views from Mt WellingtonIt is absolutely remarkable that you can drive all the way to the top of a mountain! The road to the top was well maintained and ample parking space. Amazing views of Hobart, out to Bruny Island and beyond. Best to go when there is no cloud cover otherwise you won't see anything. We saw at least two wallabies on the road up and back down the mountain. Definitely worth the trip for incredible views and really cool rock formations.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 January 2023
- memee08Perth, Australia470 contributionsImpressive views on a clear dayVery impressive panoramic views from the top of the mountain, but quite a hair-raising drive up with numerous switchbacks on a narrow road. Some of the road that we travelled up is not bitumen, however the most challenging part of the drive was right at the top (especially if other people take it fast). Plenty of walks and viewpoints available from the top and various stops along the route up, but take warm clothes - it is at least 10 degrees cooler on the top of the mountain than it is in town. Plenty of parking at the top too. A local bus from central Hobart is available if you don’t want to drive, or don’t have access to a car. Free entry.Visited January 2023Written 20 January 2023
- Marjorie NBrisbane, Australia213 contributionsWorth the tripWe have only ever previously visited Mt Wellington in the winter when there was snow, so it was stunning to enjoy the view on a warm summers day ! It was still a chilly 8°c and gusty winds, but it’s so worth it. The view from the top is breathtaking. The boardwalks are beautifully maintained and to have to protection of the building is a relief from the cold. The bathrooms are spotless. On our last visit we booked a tour bus and loved it, this time we had a hire car so drove up ourselves. It’s a stunning drive, and fascinating to see how the flora changes from lush Forrest to sparse snowy mountain landscape.Visited January 2023Travelled with familyWritten 21 January 2023

My Wellington is worth the drive purely for the view which is superb. Not much else to do up there and as we found it’s cold and windy. Still worth it though.

It’s freezing up there but well worth it for the view and the flurry of snow we got! The shelter they have made there is very warm and great to have a break from the cold. The road up and down was scary for me - was happy my partner is from New Zealand and used to those kinds of mountainous roads and could drive us up and down.

Amazing views - but pack a jumper!
We visited in late September with an 8 month old. We drove up and stopped at the Freight Cafe just as they opened for a coffee before heading up the top. Even at this time of year part of the road up was closed due to ice so definitely something for those interstate or overseas to keep in mind!
By the time we had finished our coffees both roads up were open. The road is fairly windy and narrow so definitely take it carefully. We reached the top at around 9:10am and there were plenty of car spots available. We climbed the trig station and saw snow! Or ice? Definitely 10 degrees cooler than Hobart with wind to contend with too. We visited the shelter and the lookout. Definitely a must see if you're in Hobart.
On the way down we stopped again near the cafe to go to the toilet, have a picnic lunch and do a few of the short walks that left from there. The walk around the old gardens is very flat and accessible with a pram. But the walk to the old hotel was certainly a steep one.

Should have known better, Hobart weather forecast was 20 which 10yo and I wore shorts for the day trip planned, mistake #1. I know the weather wouldn’t be the same up top but MY GOD the gusty bitterly cold winds, we stuck around for what felt like 7min and hopped straight back in the car
We were lucky that the clouds were low but not low enough to restrict visibility

Like everyone else has said, make sure you have really warm clothes available. The day we went up, it was beautiful in Hobart, but by the time we got there and got out of our car, it was hailing, not ordinary hail but hail that felt like shards of glass or a million needles pounding your face. It was freezing, but the view is great. Just keep in mind that the weather turns really quickly up there.

Interesting trip up the hill on the bus - glad I wasn't driving! Views are fantastic and the breaks in the trees made it very picturesque. The further up we went the more we had cloud cover with breaks as the wind moved everything around. At the top we had 10/10 cloud cover - it was very cold - 2 degrees -then the wind returned - lovely views started to appear again but, as promised by the bus driver, the wind chill factor hit and the temperature dropped to minus 12 degrees (checked the gauges in the viewing area and that's the temperature they showed). A great experience - views, snow, cold (very), laughter (watching the people who hadn't listened to the locals walking around in shorts or without coats and their reactions), snowball fight, and lots more views. The bus driver was excellent value - would recommend picking up the bus tour at the info centre in town
Definitely worth the trip

As said, one of the must do attractions in Hobart, great views of the whole area. As said, need to take cake driving up the narrow road. Take your jacket as can be very cold

Not sure how you will go with Uber up to Mt Wellington but I believe they close the road to the top if there is snow or other dangerous conditions

There is a really good road going all the way to the summit with a huge carpark at the peak. Visibility on certain days will be your only issue. I can't see an issue.

What’s the drive up to the top of Mount Wellington like? Is it a safe easy drive?

You can drive, catch a bus or walk. The drive for the passenger's is stunning. The driver needs to concentrate as a couple of hairpin bends but from the bottom about a 20min drive. You can stop half way, park and walk to some amazing rock formations and views. Have been up in winter, very cold, need a down jacket, gloves, beanie etc. Even in summer usually cool and a breeze. Look from Hobart and if clear go for it. If cloudly wait until it clears.

Why are people leaving negative reviews of the Mountain for naturally occurring weather and hight issues? Can someone explain to me how these people can be so stupid and self important enough to complain about visibility due to clouds or fog? Someone even complained about the "sheer drop to one side of the road"???
Deb S

I totally agree with you in that people shouldn't put a review out there when they haven't had a true experience of that place because of natural circumstances affecting their point of view. I was lucky enough to see the view and mountain on a clear day. I was told by my friends (who live there) that if it isn't a clear day you shouldn't attempt to go up there because the road will be blocked in certain places (depending on how good or bad the weather is). This is for everyone's safety. In general, I find some people will whinge about anything just because that is who they are. In my opinion, it is a beautiful part of the world regardless of whether you do or don't get to see it in it's full beauty.

Hello all!
We are looking to visit Mount Wellington to see some snow! What would be the best time To go? We were thinking mid August but want to make sure it will be cold and snowy! We traveled to New York and Canada Christmas 2018 to have a white christmas and were very upset that it did not snow at all! So definitely don't want to make sure we can try plan a snow trip!
