- BruceGPerth, Australia7 contributionsgreat walk, great viewswe walked to the Falls in intermittent cold rain but loved it. So much natural beauty at all scales from tiny flowers to huge tree ferns, all sorts of fungi, and the lovely waterfall with a great view from the suspension bridge. The walk did take three hours - remember to take some food and water- and we were tired.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 13 November 2023
- Fiona GAdelaide, Australia341 contributionsPleasant walk to Tasmania's highest fallsMontezuma falls is approximately 10 km walking on a disused train track within a temperate rainforest. The walk is predominantly flat and it is impossible to get lost. There are a few seats along the way and there is a small platform area at the base of the Falls where you can stop take a photo or have a bite to eat. There is also a suspension bridge you can cross to view the Falls. It is not necessary to cross the bridge to enjoy the Falls or the track The Falls are the highest in TasmaniaVisited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 March 2024
- Karen DLaunceston, Australia9 contributionsBeautiful walk! What a beautiful walking track following the old tram rail track. The falls, along with the information signs and the rebuilt swing bridge, made for a pleasant day's walk. A total of 11.2 klms out and back but very doable for the average person. We broke it up having our lunch at the falls. Lot's of fungi and interesting flora along the way!Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 14 April 2024

We travelled via tar and unsealed roads to the ‘largest falls’ in Tasmania to be advised it is a further 5 km walk to view them. Of no value to be advised on a sign upon arrival that the walk is required. Waste of time to travel here if you have children or elderly guests! Don’t bother going if you don’t want to walk or feel unsafe leaving your car in a deserted remote car park!

It took us exactly 3 hours to walk the track have lunch at the falls, and a few stops along the way. We were advised by a sign at the start of the walk that the suspension bridge was closed for safety reasons. Full marks for providing that information, but at the time of our walk (early Dec 2020), that closure had been in place since mid August. That's well over 100 days and still no sign of work being done to re-open it. Disappointing!
However, the falls are still spectacular and the walk pleasant enough, although beware the motorised mountain bikes! Those that enjoy bush-walking will also find the quite wide tramway walk a little bland compared to some other waterfall walks.

The track follows a former tramway through thickly forested west coast country to the highest waterfall in Tasmania at 104m. Great views can be had on the pedestrian suspension bridge but I think even better views are had following the trail to the base of the falls. This 8km track takes about 3 hours return and is easy and suitable for all ages. The trailhead is close to Queenstown where we found a comfortable caravan park to camp.

This was a great walk. Very flat and even. Was raining when we went but did not hinder us at all. The waterfall was really humming due to the rain and we could not stand too close. Shame the suspension bridge was shut for repairs as we could have got brilliant photos. Loved it. It’s about 7.2 k walk from the car park and back. Toilets near car park as well. So worth it. Kids and adults would really enjoy it

Montezuma falls is easy to get to from Rosebery. It is quite close to Rosebery (do not follow google maps) just follow the road signs to the walking track car park. The last bit of the drive is unsealed but small car/ 2wd suitable. The walk is easy and mostly flat, can be a little muddy in some parts but otherwise not too bad. It takes about 3 hours return (including photo stops for me). It is interesting to walk where the tramway used to be, you can still see the old wooden planks from the old tram line. It’s also amazing to see how the track was built in the wilderness. The falls itself is pretty spectacular. Photos doesn’t do it justice. It is much prettier when you see it in person. Be sure to spend some time to admire it.

Very long walk but easy, not too much to look at along the way and only a couple of seats. Takes about 90 minutes each way and the falls are over 100 metres high.
Watch out for snakes in warmer weather and take water to drink as the river is polluted from old mine.

Pretty waterfall at the end of a short hike in the forest. The entire return walk took us about 3 hours to complete including a short rest by the falls. The way back can be a little tedious.

We followed the old tramway to the falls with many old wooden rails and even and adit and wooden bridge to be seen along the way. The falls are huge but the rocks are slippery so beware. Took over 3 hours with a few stops, suspension bridge was still closed.

Ignore the sign at main road that there is no parking for caravans. The carpark is huge and the road in is quite okay.
The walk in to Montezuma Falls follows the old Mt Dundas Tram track and is just a beautiful walk on a well defined pathway. So picturesque and enjoyed as much as the waterfall itself. Took the 3 hours return but Strava recorded a 12km walk rather than the advertised 8kms. Highly recommend.

A beautiful walk along an old tram track. The track was wet and muddy so be prepared. The best part is the suspension bridge at the falls. Took us just over an hour of walking one way.

We are planning to rent a camper van and stay in Strnhan/Queenstown. Can we drive up to the base of the Montazooma falls and then do the trek. Is there a place to park a caravan at the base and is it safe (we wont be having anything very valuable). Are there any charges. We want to be there mid Dec before Xmas rush.
Written 7 October 2019
Yes, plenty of parking - a bit rough going in on the road so take your time

I am driving a 2WD there. Will I need to take the 4WD track to the carpark? or is there another route leading to the carpark?
Written 25 November 2018
No, the 4WD Track is seperate to the walking track. The car park for the walking track is close to town and not far off the main road. Definitely suitable for 2WD.
Written 25 November 2018
Hi Kylie,
Do you need a 4WD to get there?
Written 19 July 2018
No but it would definitely make it easier! We did it in a normal car

Dear,... I am bringing my 70 years old mom, and 2 kids (10,9) with me in mid-Dec. Do you think the 3 hrs walk to Montezuma Fall be challenge for my mom? She is healthy, but if the path is too steep or too much downhill, that will be a problem for her. Secondly, may i know the exact place to park my car where is the closest to the site?
Tks a lot for your info!!
Best,
Alex Wong
