- AniaIzaLondon, United Kingdom21 contributionsNeeds at least two days to do it justicePristine nature reserve Maria Island can be toured either on foot or by bike. Nature rules here, so bring your own food and water and take anything you don’t use back off the island with you. Despite being the biggest draw in the SE Tasmania, area we often found ourselves completely alone in forests, on cliff tops, on beaches and amongst the amazing animals. A truly beautiful place that I would encourage anyone to visit. One caveat: Despite having Australia’s most healthy surviving population of Tasman Devils, your chances of seeing them are minimal unless camping overnight - they are strictly nocturnal.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 March 2024

The island is quite large - About 40 km from one end to the other. There are no cars or shops on the island but you can camp there and take or hire bikes. There are several walks of varying lengths and degrees of difficulty. Lots of wildlife and a nice beach. It costs about $50 return on the ferry, with additional costs if you take a bike over or take a large amount of luggage such as camping equipment. There is also remains of the original convict base to see.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 March 2024

Hired bikes & did two of the tracks. Loved the wombats everywhere & all the kangaroos by the airstrip!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 May 2024

On Our Trip To Tasmania My Wife, Originally From Triabunna Where The Ferry Travels To And From Maria Island Wanted To Revisit As She Had Camped There Previously And I Hadn't Had The Opportunity On Previous Visits To Experience This Beautiful Location. We Were Very Fortunate With The Weather( Sunny But Cool) On The Day Of Our Visit As There Is Plenty Of Walking Or Bike Riding To Be Done. Mention That Walking And Bike Trails Are Graded According To Time And Degree Of Difficulty - A Map Is Available From The Park Rangers Office And Trails Are Clearly Marked On Signs. You Will Require A Park Pass To Visit And Are Available At The Booking Office At The Triabunna Dock Where The Ferry Departs From. The Island Scenery and Landscape Is Diverse, From Open Grassland To Deep Rainforest. The Fauna Consisted Of Wombats-Happy For Photo Shots, Cape Barren Geese And Wallabies? We Didn't Encounter Any Snakes On Our Walks However It Was Cool So Maybe Not Too Active. The Historical Element Was Interesting And This Is To Be Seen At The Settlement And Other Places Located Around The Island. Lots Of Photo Opportunities Abound And Must Also Mention Taking Plenty Of Drinking Water With You And Food - No Shops There .Highly Recommended.

Great commentary on the ferry ride over.
Rainy day but rugged up and took umbrella as minimal shelter when walking around.
Wombats roam freely as do cape barren geese etc. Everyone now asked to stay 2 metres distance from all wildlife as preservation measure. History of settlement was fascinating. We walked to the painted cliffs - amazing but best viewed after 12.30pm and prior to 4pm when tide is out. We found leaving on 9am ferry and returning on 2pm ferry enough time to look around settlement, walk to cliffs and take time to stop and eat lunch. Take food and drink as nowhere to purchase on island.
Would definitely recommend.

Stay in Maria Island is a must! It’s the best way to see the abundant wildlife that lives there: wombats, pandemelons, wallabies, kangooros, gooses. So the penitentiary is the best (and only) place to stay (the other option is the campgroung).
The accommodation should be booked in advance because there is only 10 bedrooms. Each one has 6 beds minimum, but they are not shared rooms, one more reason to book them in advance. There is no lights in the rooms and they get dark early in the afternoon, so don’t forget your torch. The toilets are very close as well the big main room, where there are big tables and a big kitchen with stoves and sinks (pans and liquid soap are available).
If you can book to stay at least a night in the island it’s a zoo without no cages. Such an amazing experience!!!

Highly recommend hiring a bike (book ahead in peak times) even though we had to push it up a few hills, we definitely felt it was worthwhile and meant we could cover what we wanted to on the island. With the first ferry now only at 10.00am and having to leave at 4.00pm. You would find it difficult to cover the basics without them. The tides weren't kind to us for the painted cliffs but they were still worth a look. We saw wombats and enjoyed the history of the Prohibition station. Don't forget to take water and a snack as none available on the island..

Came here for the wombats ! with a party of 3 including elderly family member. Writing this review bearing in mind person who is not a hiker/push bike rider
The ferry over Encounter Maria Island was 40 mins late departing, no explanation given upon late arrival from the island, then packed up bikes into ferry without communication to the 30 or so customers waiting on the dock. Got to Maria Island eventually. (40 mins late) during winter season.
The arrival area on Maria Isl is relatively flat with a small incline over about 500m to Darlington.
We spent time with the wombats and viewing some of the buildings, ate our lunch and then in the 2.30pm return ferry.
We only had a short trip 11.30 over and 2.30pm back due to elderly family member who could not do longer walks. However if the ferry departure time was on time we could of had more time on the island so that was disappointing.

As a participant in a Uni course, I spent 7 fantastic days camped on the Island. Although absorbed in the long day and night elements of the course, it was impossible to not to absorb the Island's scenery, wildlife and history.
Day trippers, campers and school groups likewise were all observed to be engrossed in what the Island had to offer. Self guided cycling and easy to moderate walks look to be the most popular activities but, as there are no shops, you need to self cater.
Bikes can be carried on the ferry or hired and respite from the elements can be had in the old convict dining room.

We took the 9 a.m. ferry and returned on the 15:30 which gave us plenty of time to visit the old prisoner grounds and read the history of the place. Also walked to the painted and fossil cliffs. Go to the painted cliffs at low tide for best access to the spectacular cliffs. They are some of the most picturesque sandstone I've ever seen. Walking around the island we saw plentiful wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies and lots of wombats that were foraging during the day. Coastal vistas are stunning at different points along the walk. There is a place to rent bicycles once you arrive on the island. The ferry ride isn't very long but if you are prone to seasickness take precautions. Maria island is definitely one of our Tasmania trip highlights.

Great place to visit and see wombats. We rode bikes around part of the island, a quick swim at one of the beaches, a picnic lunch and then wombat spotting in the afternoon. The weather changed very quickly while we were there from sunny to bucketing with cold rain (and boats getting cancelled) to sunny and beautiful again. So come prepared also make sure you book a bike before hand as there were a few people who missed out on getting a bike for the day.

We were so excited about visiting Maria Island and the day we went it was cold, windy and raining unfortunately. We still managed to walk quite a long distance and saw the many wombats and wallabies on the island. Even though the weather was miserable the island was still beautiful and we really did enjoy our time there.
I think if we ever went again we would hire some bikes so we could see more of the island. Lots of wonderful history associated with the island.

Although the island itself does not belong to one of famous attractions in Tas, it definitely worth a visit. It is relatively untouched and a natural, The scenery it offered is unparallel. The island is located ~1hr drive from Hobart plus a 35min or so ferry ride. The island itself has minimal facilities, but it would be a great place for a picnic. It's indeed a mustgo for the wildlife lovers.

Is there somewhere on the Island that rents out snorkel gear near the no-fishing area?
Written 25 January 2020
Hi Dreamer10- sorry about the slow response. I saw people with a group tour who supplied snorkling gear to them, but nothing at all on the island itself.

Hi, may I know where to search for the timetable for the tides which is the best to visit painted cliff for the time and date?

Hi, if I want to stay one night before taking ferry at Triabunna, which part do you guys recommend? I did some research and seems triabunna areas nothing much if stay there for a night. Im coming from Hobart airport from 1530hours, then straight to one place which im still finding , to stay over so next day can take the 9/10am ferry to maria island. Any suggestion?

My family stayed at an airbnb in Orford the night before and it was only a 15 minutes drive to the Maria Island terminal the next morning. You can head straight to Orford from Hobart and I think it is about an hour's drive.

Hi, is the ferry harbor far from the painted cliff? How far is it ? Walking distance or what type of transport can we have? I'm having a 1 year old baby with us. traveling with 2 adults. Actually we just want to see the painted Cliff. Thanks

Is there any rental of bicycle there? Or only can go by foot?
Is it worth it the area if I only have about 1/2 a day there.

Where's the best place to organise a packed lunch before boarding the ferry?
Written 6 April 2019
I'd suggest hitting the supermarket the night before and making your own. Cafes seemed a bit thin on the ground in Triabunna and you might as well take an early ferry to make the best use of the day. The ferry itself does a few snacks though.

Can you walk around Maria island by yourself or you must go on a guided tour? We are planning 3-4 hours in Maria island , to see the painted cliff, the reservoir and some possums.
Written 18 February 2019
My friend and I did the painted cliffs walk on our own. The signs are clearly marked and fairly level path for most of it. Going in a group you learn more about the historical details but there’s books for that. Enjoy!

I am looking at going to Maria Island with my elderly mother. She is mobile but unable to walk great distances. I was wondering how far the walks and settlement are from the ferry terminal on the island.
Written 12 December 2018
The small settlement of Darlington is very close to the ferry terminal, approx 10 mins walk and slightly uphill. All trails start at the ferry terminal, unsealed and easy walking up/down hills.
Check out the parks.tas.gov.au web for walk info.
Once you reach the settlement, there are benches just outside the old penitentiary where your mom can relax. There's also a communal kitchen for guests staying overnight if you want to use for a picnic lunch or snack.

Hi, I was wondering if we decide to go to the island overnight are there any secure parking options available on the mainland?
Written 8 February 2018
We always leave ours at Triabunna near where the ferry leaves - most folks do and haven’t heard of any problems
