- Mairwen1United Kingdom11,630 contributionsOvernighting at Beautiful WhitehavenWhitehaven Beach is usually listed as #1 sight in the Whitsundays. It’s a uniquely beautiful, sprawling white sand beach with stunning turquoise blue water. There’s actually a scientific reason why it’s so beautiful. The sand is 98.9% pure silica giving it that amazing white colour. The diffusion of sunlight through suspended particles of sand in the water creates the incredible shades if blue. Silica sand is also very soft. It felt more like baby talc than sand grains. Surprisingly it didn’t seem to retain heat and burn your feet the way that normal sand does. The one downside is that Whitehaven attracts a crowd. It’s a very popular spot for bareboat charters and commercial boats come and go all day long. However the beach is 7 km long, so to escape the main crowd, all we had to do was walk a little further down the beach. If like us, you’ve hired a bareboat catamaran, then I’d highly recommend staying overnight at Whitehaven. All of the day boats and commercial boats have left by mid-afternoon and the over-nighters are left with the beach all to themselves. One of our great memories from the Whitsundays is sitting on our boat at the end of the day, drink in hand and overlooking Whitehaven Beach as the sun set. Its worth noting that there are no moorings at Whitehaven, (the closest are at Tongue Bay or Chalkies Beach) However, be prepared to get here early to Also be prepared to put up with a bit of night-time noise. Nobody goes to Whitehaven for privacy or for peace, that’s for sure. Mostly people are respectful of others but noise travels very easily over the water at night and its likely that there will be a couple of boats partying into the smaller hours. TIP: Before leaving Whitehaven, we motored around to Tongue Bay and climbed to the Hill Inlet Lookout. This was a steep but easy walk which took us up to a series of lookout points with sweeping views down over Whitehaven Beach. Such a special view! Don’t miss out on doing this.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 7 February 2024
- nitawilson70Upper Coomera, Australia117 contributionsDip your toesThis was my second visit to whitehaven beach and the unspoilt beauty still astounds me today. Best place to access the beach is from Hamilton resort, taking approximately 30 minutes via a leisurely and scenic sail. The silica sand casts an almost white luminous glow against the blue backdrop of the water, making this a stunning setting for photos and to simply relax. In the heart of the Great Barrier Reef this place is not to be missed. You can swim, sunbake, or if a little more adventurous take a hike to hill inlet or snorkel at chalkies beach. Keep a lookout for the dolphins, turtles and other marine life that surround the tropical waters along this coastline - an absolute piece of Australian paradise.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 March 2024
- DeidreNYCNew York City, New York40 contributionsA beach to rememberWe visited for two hours as part of Explore’s Sail & Snorkel after a morning of snorkeling at Chalkies Beach. The silica sand is pure white and feels like talcum powder. I discovered the sand was so fine that you could sculpt a face in it! The water is turquoise blue and the waves are gentle. Yes, various excursion boats drop off people at the same end of the beach, but a 15-minute stroll will bring you to stretches with almost no one. After all, the beach is seven kilometers long. If you visit Hamilton Island, it’s worth your while to find a way to visit Whitehaven. Nothing on Hamilton Island compares.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 August 2024

Whitehaven Beach is about 7km long, and every inch is special. The fine silica sand is amazing.
I visited as part of a cruise day with GSL which started with a lunch at the south end, then a trip to Hill Inlet for that iconic view.
Its a bucket list Must Do.

We were very lucky and had perfect weather the day we went and were able to take some lovely photographs from Hill Inlet and on Whitehaven Beach. Got a photo sitting on the famous tree with the cool branches. The silica sand is lovely to walk in. The beach was very hot on the day we went but you could source shade under trees if you needed it. We went in the water in our stinger suits. I think the view from Hill Inlet differs a lot depending on tide levels. There weren't many swirls as such the time we were there. If we had gone up again later in the day perhaps we would have got quite a different picture.

Whitehaven with its pure white silica sand and pristine 50 shades of blue water lives up to the hype. I spent just over 2 hours at Whitehaven on a set half day tour with Cruise Whitsundays and it was a wonderful experience. I did 2 of the walks in the National Park, Solway Circuit (1.2km) and Whitehaven Beach lookout track (970m). The latter was by far the best and featured amazing views of the beach, and out over Whitsunday Island. I saw three monitors/goannas on the tracks at different times. After the walk I cooled off with a refreshing swim. This beach is consistently voted in the Top 10 in the world so come check out what the fuss is about! The beach is located on the South East side of Whitsunday Island and is accessed via various cruise companies from Airlie Beach & Hamilton Island (I went with Cruise Whitsundays on a half day tour from Airlie for $120)

A day well spent with plenty to do.the view from hill inlet was the highlight of the day.
We did snorkeling in a protected bay behind Whitehaven beach. We had BBQ lunch and then did the Hill Inlet walk. The company told us just before departure that there wasn’t enough people to do the bushwalking but we complained that this was the highlight of the day and so they eventually agreed. Tour companies should warn when booking that itinerary changes are dependent on numbers or customers end up being disappointed.

There's no doubt about it, Whitehaven Beach on a beautiful sunny day is simply stunning. The almost pure silica sands give off some incredible colours. It is, of course, very popular with many day tours and private boats visiting. We did three visits - two to the more popular southern end and one to the northern end as well as the lookout over Hill Inlet. The latter can get busy too but is still well worth it. We also took a plane trip over the beach and heart reef - this was superb. There's not alot to do at the beach other than sunbathe and use any paddleboards/beach games your tour operator provides. Stinger suits also have to be worn in jellyfish season. There are no corals per se but a few fish do swim around and at the very southern end of the beach there are some rocks which attract a few more fish and are worth a snorkel. There are (long drop) toilets and a few tables and benches, some in the shade. A few walking trails as well if you wish. Be aware that the seagulls and ravens are pretty brazen and will happily attack unattended bags looking for food. We saw a couple of large goannas as well.
So definitely come and visit. Try and get up in the air and also visit the largely deserted northern end of the beach if you can.

This is a must do when you go to Airlie and the Whitsundays. Highly recommend using Cruise Whitsundays that offer a guided walk at Hill Inlet, a delicious lunch and great service.
Make sure you snorkel at the southern end reef, there are thousands of fish and live coral galore. Yep, it is not all dead.

It’s a wonderful boat ride to Whitehaven Beach which stops at the famous Hamilton & Daydream Islands along the way.
If you can’t afford a helicopter ride over the Whitsundays... then make sure you walk one of the 2 trails that lead to the most magnificent birds eye view lookouts! It’s well worth the walk. I’m 56 & was not long out of hospital, so I wasn’t going to do it but I’m glad I did. I was a little puffed as was expected but goes to show it’s not really a difficult walk to the top.
Beautiful fine squeaky white sand & pristine, cool, clear, aquamarine water to splash around in. Nature at its very best, as long as you don’t go on an overcast day!

Whitehaven with ZigZag WhitSundays..What a great day.. family operated very professional crew delivering a great experience swimming and snorkelling at Whtehaven then visiting long Island for refreshments. Appreciated the spray jackets and wetsuits, I noticed other operators didn't include both of these . Great boat driving by the skipper also. Coral reef was fantastic

White sands stretching on forever set among perfect turquoise seas. The postcard picture is just amazing when you see it with your own eyes. Flew over, so didnt get to touch it or swim in it, but did with other areas on the Great Barrier Reef. Put it on your bucket list.

Wanting to do a half day tour to Whitehaven beach, is the morning or afternoon trip better?
Written 11 April 2021
Do it at the afternoon because it's so amazing in Whitehaven Beach is better to do it in the afternoon because you know how it feels great and their massage shops open!

Where is the South Whitehaven Beach lookout path - our last trip we walked a path until it branched off to the right to Chance Bay or a shorter path to the left to a rocky outcrop lookout which overlooked Whitehaven (partial view) but I’ve seen photos of a much more substantial lookout and wonder if we turned off too early ?
We don’t want to trek all the way to Chance Bay and there was no other signage mentioning the lookout - does anyone know the actual path to the South Whitehaven Beach lookout (not the one up near Hill Inlet)

Si viajar a Hamilton Island que tiene un buen aeropuerto y de ahí navegando, el helicóptero o hidroavión. Es muy cerca para ir por el día desde allí.

Hi Josefina,
When I was searching around trying to find information before my trip, I googled a lot and found the main website for hamilton island to be the best go-to. (it won't let me write the website address) I know it can be overwhelming with all the information, but it helped me a lot.
I'm not sure specifically about the 'camp site' but there are many businesses/boats that go to different drop off points at whitehaven. Some do afternoon tours, but I believe it does sometimes depend on the tides/day of the week/weather.
We booked ours when we got to the island and went to the 'Explore' shop at the Marina. There we could ask for the best day to go based on weather/wind/tides etc.
Hope that helps in some way.
Have a great time!
