Behind the Botanic Gardens is Mount Whitfield Conservation Park, home to the Red and Blue Arrow Trails. These two linked tracks ascend the slopes of Mount Whitfield.

The Red Arrow loop trail (1.5Km return) beginning at Collins Avenue, climbs 100m in elevation through rainforest, Eucalypt forest and grasslands to a lookout above the Cairns International Airport offering views over the city and out to Green Island.

A short link trail ascends a further 50 metres to another lookout from where the Blue Arrow loop trail (4.5Km return) commences. The Blue Arrow trail takes you through mainly rainforest to an elevation of 300m. About half way around, a short side track will take you to a lookout on the summit of Mt Lumley Hill where you get views along the coast to the north of Cairns.

The red arrow was easy, the view is ok though, cover by alot of trees. If you can, continue the blue arrow, it is like a bush walking experience. The blue arrow track is not rewarding though, not much view at the top except a bench with roof, lol. I have much better bush walk. Don't waste your time unless... More

Whenever I'm in Cairns I have to visit the Red Arrow Walk. The Red Arrow provides a fantastic viewing spot of Cairns Airport to sit and watch the many domestic and international flights take-off and land. This walk is not overly difficult, but can be quite hot and humid in the Cairns Climate. Make sure you review Arrival and Departure... More

If you're an experienced hiker, the Red Arrow should only be the beginning of your walk. Near the highest point of the circuit follow the Blue Arrows to get into the real bush. The narrow, easily recognizable walking track leads up close to the summit of Mount Whitfield and continues down the other side of the ridge back to the... More

I am extremely unfit but can do the Red Arrow. There are some challenging steps half way up and the last bit is a bit steep too but you feel you victorious having done it and the view is beautiful. After your rest you walk down the opposite site which is pleasant after the steep climb. Don't do after dark... More

This is basically a fitness circuit for a lot of cairns locals who run/walk around the circuit several times. It isn't an easy climb while you are in the acsension part of the climb but it doesn't last to long. Overall it is a pretty quick trip, has good views and you can incorporate it into a trip to the... The smallest of the walks, easily done in 1/2 h. View is ok, not amazing. I havent done the blue and green walks but heard they are worth it, and i believe more than this one. Its actually good, nonetheless, for people who whish to jog hard! Popular spot for that.

An avid lover of the Red I do three to five a day I thought I would check out the Blue Arrow walk. It starts off okay but then becomes a disgrace. Very dangerous tree roots, hard to climb over rocks, hidden holes on the track and land slides leaving only 10 cm in places for foot holds if that... More

The Red Arrow walk is a Cairns icon. Over the years more stress have been put is so is a lot easier. It works you over a it, but walking through the rainforest is fine

It is best to start the walk at the red arrow which is behind the cairns Botanic Gradens It is a long walk which will take you along the Whitfield ranges and you walk down to the suburb if Whitfield. On my last walk around the Blue...
