- Carla PAdelaide, Australia19 contributionsPleasant surpriseWe were a bit unsure of what to expect after reading some mixed reviews. We were greeted by a very strong smelling bird odour upon entering the main precinct on the island, and then walked the perimeter where signs indicated that swimming and snorkelling was not advised. This left us very confused as the tour we took offered snorkelling as an option on the island. We followed the crowds and chose to snorkel next to the jetty, and we were not disappointed. Our kids explored the reef and were very impressed with what they saw. We lost count of the number of sea turtles we saw and the weather was just perfect! We opted for sandwiches from lite bites cafe, which were on the cheaper end of food available which we enjoyed. Overall, our day was incredibly special and the sea life and coral is definitely worth seeing. After a questionable start, the day was fantastic and we would recommend to others.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 3 November 2023
- D-towner RDarwin, Australia165 contributionsGorgeous day on Green IslandWhat a fabulous time you can have on Green island! The beauty of this island is that the reef is easily accessible by strolling off the beach and into the water. We found the best beach and snorkelling opportunities were next to the jetty when you first arrive at the island. The beach is clean and the water calm and inviting. The snorkelling offered an array of marine life including turtles, plenty of fish, an octopus, coral and a cruising shark. Both my husband and I and our two children loved it here. My best tip for the day would be to invest in hiring a stinger suit - these offer great protection from stingers, the sun and provides some insulation for the cooler water. The only negative I have for the island is that food and drinks are eye watering expensive. Other than that - amazing!!Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 6 November 2023
- TravelogoLondon, United Kingdom280 contributionsTicks many boxes but not ideal for a barrier reef visitThis is a good place to get an overview of the barrier reef. it is on the fringes of the reef so do not expect an "authentic" reef experience. I say that it ticks many boxes for a reef type visit for the following reasons: it is close to cairns- you can get to it in 40 minutes by ferry; it is one of the least expensive tours of the reef; it has lovely beaches; it is children friendly; it has walks and a swimming pool; it has passable coral for snorkelling; it has an adequate restaurant. The best place to snorkel here is under the bridge that takes you to and from the landing boats, anywhere else is a disappointment. If I visited again I would choose another tour that takes you to the outer reef. Green island is suitable for those who aren't much into snorkelling (or those who are elderly or travelling with very young children) but want to dabble whilst enjoying all the other amenities of a beach resort. It's a beautiful island but if you want to take a proper look at the GBR I would advise you to take one of those tours that take you to a floating platform in the outer reef, where you can spend all day viewing the reef.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 April 2024
- Jennifer TBrisbane, Australia22 contributionsGreen island EscapeWe stayed here in a slow season for 7 nights so the resort was definitely not at capacity. Busy through the day though with day trippers. This was a place to relax. We swam, read, visited the Crocodile Park, went to the outer reef to snorkel and scuba dive, did the glass bottom boat trip and some rainforest walks. Something to note is that house guests can come in and out of the Crocodile Park once you’ve paid the entry fee. We visited 3 times to see the show so get in early during your stay for best benefit. House guests get free use of beach equipment, beach chairs, umbrellas, kayaks etc. Snorkelling off the beach near the jetty is best but limited coral. Plenty of fish and the odd turtle though. The resort is pretty well maintained. Some things might need refreshing but mostly all good. The staff were so friendly and competent Food in the restaurant was amazing. Prices a bit higher but that was to be expected. We took some snacks with us as the shops have limited choices. Mostly icecream, crisps and a few chocolate bars. Note -You are not permitted to take an esky or alcohol to the island Breakfast was included and had all we could want. Other Dining was mostly in the Little Bites for lunch ( hamburgers, steak sandwich, hotdogs etc) and restaurant for dinner other than a couple of nights we had burgers from the bar. The bar is open in the evenings if there are enough house guests. A couple of nights during our stay it was closed. All in all a good holiday. Probably wouldn’t return as we’d explore another island next time.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 May 2024
- Helen & RobAdelaide, Australia72 contributionsWORTH THE VISITEnjoyed this little island on a day tour. Lovely walks etc to do. It's all well organised. Apparently you can stay there as there is a small resort. But too quiet for me. Some people told us only about 30 people staying there. They said the food was quite expensive. We enjoyed the day tour. Enjoy....Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 May 2024

We saw a few fish. Biggest turn off is that the island is run really smelly!! We had fun but next time I’ll look elsewhere.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 August 2024
- Charles charlie220 contributionsA day well spent on the reefGreen Island is an integral part of the total north Queensland and Great Barrier Reef experience. 45min by ferry from Cairns at a cost of ca 100au$ return, you get to spend up to 7h on the island and explore a rich and varied marine and tropical life. With various activities on offer from snorkeling, diving, swimming, and boat trips to explore the nearby reef shelves. On the island itself the main attraction is the crocodile farm with the inclusion of the world largest crocodile in captivity, yes you get to meet Cassius at whopping 5.48m long, and a ton in weight, only when you come close to such creatures, you feel the terror seeping through your body. A glass bottom boat trip into the reef is very much recommended, the one we took, where you get a chance to see colorful fish swimming in the shallow reef. All in all its a day we'll spent, and we'll worth the money should you choose to pick this trip. You won't regret it.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 September 2024
- Belinda8Hobart, Australia25 contributionsBeautiful IslandSecond visit to Green Island. A 2 hour stopover on our reef cruise. Such a beautiful little island. Wonderful snorkelling. Weather was rough but it was still clear underwater. Saw a turtle swimming below us and lots of colourful reef fish. Lovely relaxing place to spend a few hours or day.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 September 2024

Green Island is not worth your time or money, I would recommend looking at other reefs to visit. It looks beautiful in pictures and even as the boat nears it, but...once you get there you are hit with the strong stench of bird urine across the main area and it has very dated facilities and equipment. Lycra suits were severely worn (and wet!) When they were given to us, not sure how a holey suit would protect from jellyfish. Bathrooms were disgusting.

Cairns council should go out to Green Island and experience what the tourist see and do they should check the reviews and listen to people. Green Island needs a lot of work to attract the tourist to visit start by fixing up the restaurants to cater for everybody not only serving up fast foods eg burgers chips. The Capony Grill didn’t have any bread to make sandwiches but they had bread rolls to make burgers they wouldn’t make ham/cheese or chicken rolls for us. They can arrange for bread etc to be brought over on the early boats to the island. Overprice food. Cafe no sandwiches only fruit salad, tea/coffee and a couple of cakes to select from. Bring your own food highly recommended. Apart from snorkeling there is nothing to do 1.1/2 hours is plenty over here. $25 to go and see a crocodile ridiculous you can go to Hartley creek and have a great time there worth the money. One swimming pool. Not a lot of tables and chairs around the food court for patronage. The best part of the day was the boat ride to and from the Island. Excellent boat crews.

Well where does one start, advertising should be updated ASAP as what is advertised is definitely not what you get.
The buildings, well the word derelict comes to mind and most of the shops are closed down, a ghost town is the feeling of the place
For goodness sake please take your own food and beverages otherwise you will be sadly disappointed with what you get on the island.
Should you wish to purchase food and drinks there make sure you take out a second mortgage to pay for it.
Snorkeling is good but don’t expect to see what you see on the advertising posters.
Overall the staff were great however we were bemused by one staff member who insisted I wait one more minute from 11.29 to 11.30 to order a pizza, trust me it was not worth the wait, laying flat out on the beach eating sand would have been more gratifying.
Should you desire to visit the place you may wish to pack a water blaster to clean the place down because clearly no one else has thought to do it in a long, long time.
Don’t be misled by the advertising stating there is a restaurant. Well there is a restaurant but it is not open for day trippers only guests staying at the resort.
I am not one for writing negative reviews quite the opposite but it is sad to hear all the unhappy chatter about the place once back in Cairns.
Some funds, ideas and elbow grease could make this place fantastic, for all the talk of looking after the reef and the surrounding areas makes me wonder why Green Island is not included in the conversation.

More welcome for day trippers is required. We arrived as part of a day tour to Moore Reef and were on the island for some 3 hours. We walked around the island taking in its unique rainforest and sad to learn that the natives were taken off the island many moons ago by missionaries. The signs say stingers are in the sea so the only other thing to do was to swim in the pool but who wants to go all that way to swim in a pool? Most of the shops on the island were closed down. Other than the dive shop, the only restaurant/shop open was not taking diners until after 10am. In that restaurant only 2 of the many many tables were empty (I didn't count the number of tables available there were lots) . It was unfriendly. I realise that Covid has had an affect but you need to welcome people if you want people to go there. The ice cream shop finally opened and it was delicious and the staff friendly the only good thing about the island.

Disappointed how overhyped it is...
Not very serene with the hundreds of tourists at one time ruining the experience.
The lifeguards got shi**y at me for standing in the water in a sandy patch, not coral. I was trying to be as respectful as possible.
(Maybe you shouldn't be opening beaches for swimming and hosting hundreds of people to the island every single day to stand in the water and 'destroy' the reef...)
You will also enjoy the overpriced everything including $22 aeroplane quality fish and chips...
It is the first place that I've ever visited where you have to spend $40 to rent two chairs and an umbrella by the beach because management knows that people will fork out the money. If you decide not to rent the shade, you will be left struggling to find suitable shade and space.
The whole place is quite run down with done very dangerous rotten boards leading off the jetty which I almost tripped over.
The best part of the day was the glass bottom boat, we had a funny guide.

Booked eco trip to Green Island $426 for 4 adults. Ferry journey was fine and the beach and surrounding waters are great, however, that could not be said for the rest of the island. Everywhere was grubby, tables and chairs in poor condition and mostly dirty. The restaurant was not open to visitors and the two snack bars and pool bar were understaffed and very very expensive ($9.25 for a small VB beer). A really poor offering and we unfortunately had to wait for the return ferry along with many similarly minded customers. One to miss and a precious day wasted.

Enjoyed snorkelling, the crocodile park, and surrounding beaches, however could not believe that beach two had the irdasisity to charge 40$ for a day to use an umbrella and sun chair. There's competition and not a nice way to welcome guests infact its embarrassing! It's like going to a restaurant a paying for good food then being charged 40$ to use a chair! Then the staff said he's been doing this job for 22 years! Gee I wonder why! What a rip off, and yeah probably the best job in the world. And by the way one chair had a band aid left on it yuck! For 40$ I will bring my own, though don't think I will be returning for a while.

The trip to Green Island was in our package.
The boat ride through Great Adventures was very smooth and helpful staff.
When we got to the island, the tide was out so we went for a walk around to check out the island, the island was not what we had expected.
The dive shop was open and one other area to order some basic snacks if you wished and somewhere undercover to eat. We had taken our own snacks and just ordered drinks.
Staff in the dive shop had said they are not doing an scuba diving at all at present due to so low visitors and its not cost effective to run the scuba dives cause of the cost to them. You can hire snorkels and fins and we did that once the tide had started to come in. We did see some colourful fish and some coral. The water is crystal clear and refreshing.
Did the glass bottom boat tour which was also part of the package, the tour guide was great, very witty and very knowledgable.
Visited the crocodile park and watched an informative show about crocodiles and saw Cassius the largest living croc in captitivity, he was huge!!
Before we left on the afternoon boat, went for a walk around to the Green Island Resort, what i saw was very sad, rooms and buildings all run down, trees overgrown, palm frons everywhere on the ground, even the helicopter pad was overgrown!! There was also a very strong smell when walking under the trees maybe from the bat colony there?? Obviously COVID has had a huge effect on the island and with no tourists coming to stay the resort has been neglected. Hopefully, when the borders open they can get staff to bring it back to some sort of glory. It will take a bit of money to do so and manpower.

A waste of time and money you will see more spending the day by the lagoon in Cairns. This is just a massive overpriced tourist trap under the guise of seeing the Great Barrier Reef. Everything on the island is tired and old. There is no reef other than dull underwater grass. If you want any shade you have to pay. Food price sample: burger $27; margarita pizza $24 (both terrible quality). The best part about the day was the boat ride home. Green Island never again.

Disappointed. Beautiful island but the place is tired and very commercial. Watch the tide, and the wind. Our tour hit the island on an extremely low tide and it was blowing the clappers. Nowhere to snorkel with the low tide and once we herded into lunch and then the glass bottom boat, we explored the island and then had some 2.5 hours of nothing to do without putting our hand in our pocket. Tried to get an earlier boat out. Would really benefit from some free informational tours, an indigenous tour would be good.

Hello
We are going to visit green island and staying at the resort in April ( stinger season inApril?) and planning to do snorkelling with the kids there
I just want to ask if anyone know is there any stinger net there ? Is it safe to snorkel there ? Any box jellyfish or Irukandje there ?
Does any one snorkel there need to wear special protective suit to prevent jellyfish ?
Any idea would be appreciated as it’s first time with the kids there for snorkelling thanks

I was there in December, we did snorkel off of a boat and off the beach. When we did it off the boat, Jellyfish were everywhere, I called it snorkeling with the Jellyfish because we didn't see much fish. After we got back on the island we snorkeled from the beach. Most of the people that were snorkeling from the beach did not have stinger suits on and there are no nets, and we only saw a couple of Jellyfish but we did keep ours on after seeing them everywhere just 1 mile off the beach. I guess most people didn't wear the stinger suits because the Jellyfish there were low level stingers meaning there stings were not painful at all. I got stung on my chin and face where the hood didn't cover. It only hurt for a few minutes, it felt like someone poked me with a needle. The Jellyfish do was up on the beach, we walked around the island on the beach and we had to watch were we stepped because they were on the beach.
Good luck

Is Green Island near outer reef which is suppose to be better for snorkelling
Written 2 November 2017
If you go to Green Island - around the old underwater observatory (beach side) at the jetty you will see 'Nemo'. There is a lot of coral, fish and rays. Green Island also has the largest Crocodile in captivity. Feeding shows are twice daily and the Crocodile farm is worth a visit. We did it all outer-reef, Green and Fitzroy Island all trips were great!

Hi,
I will be doing Travel around the world next year. I am looking for to do Green island on my own. Is it possible just to book a ferry without agency ? All I see , there are all offers of agencies. Thank you so ,ugh for help. Eliza

Hi
The ferry operators have offices at the wharf itself - my experience is that the tour operators often have tickets for longer than the ferry companies, so you may need to go two days in advance or be prepared to go for the higher priced ferry if you want to bookdirect. The price difference was only $6 from $90 ticket so there isn't much to be saved.
